as far as kids today go, mine are pretty fit although we see a bunch of fatties especially when traveling to red states like Tennessee. Unfortunately some Republicans protest against healthy school lunches and hate people who exercise (rolling coal by cyclists and runners). Sadly it some have been hit by beer cans and bottles.

Kids today (at least in my state) do have to tests like running the mile, the pacer test, push-ups, sit-ups, standing broad jump, sit-and-reach so it’s not like there’s no fitness standards is schools today. but it would be cool if they could earn something like the presidential fitness patch.
Years ago I told my class I could save trillions in fraudulent insurance charges and set a pattern to greatly reduce America's obesity and diabetes numbers within a year. All we have to simply do is have weigh ins at schools every 2-3 months. If a kid weighs to much or does not show improvements after 6 months....parents get charged for child abuse. You see...there used to be 1 fat kid in every class. Now they are everywhere. Some FAT mom that looked like Shrek complained to my principal who laughed her ass off.

Attended public schools in Kenosha during the sixties/seventies. I can count on one hand the number of fat kids I ever came across, and it's not like any of us were starving.
Showed up for army boot camp during the shattered economy of the Carter years. Two guys and one chick in my company had some fat to melt off, the rest of us were in decent to exceptional shape upon arrival.
Interesting, I do know the Carter era had some morale issues, etc. I knew people in the army at the time and they were worried that our best tanks (M60A3) were nowhere near as good as the then-modern T-72B1/T-64BVs in service with the USSR and Warsaw Pact.
Pres. Reagan helped to rebuild the 600-ship Navy, along with SecNav John Lehman. I also think at the time there was a crisis of confidence, in that the USSR was getting ahead of the US at that point in some military capacities.
