So many “coaches” and “experts” here never took an exercise physiology class or have been on an actual college team. None of the women who were training even under 50 miles a week even had periods, that’s not even considered “intense training”. It’s the bodies response to more than normal stress. Nobody seems to make a big deal about make distance runners having their testosterone levels reduced while aerobic training…
A lot of high schoolers or parents who never have had a proper kinesiology education would understand this, including most of you posting on this. The coach’s response probably was intended to not have their athlete overthink and their athlete did the stupidest thing known to the running world…tried to get advice on letsrun.
My college coach told me that most elite women lose their periods when they train hard in college, and that's how we know we are training like a DI program. But everything I read online and have learned in school has said this is very risky. I know many of my teammates have lost their periods as well and I'm pretty sure he is telling them the same thing. I mean, we are running well right now so I guess it's working, but should I still say something? Have any of you experienced this with your college coach telling you its a good thing? How did you handle this?
Go to his boss. Document the meeting. Then if nothing changes, go to human resources. It's not worth being a viking or a bronco

The following forms are for interested student-athletes trying out for a varsity sport. New and returning student-athletes will be provided a link to complete all

You think it's responsible to tell a girl that if she has her period she's not training like a D1 athlete?
If that's actually true, idk what to think of that. Makes it seem that elite distance running is extremely unhealthy. Of course, there's a ton of sports where training at an elite level goes way beyond heath, but how many make women lose their periods?
This is actually a very serious subject that affects many athletes in this sport. I know a troll when I see one but other impressionable young athletes reading this nonsense may not. Rethink your life choices spewing this kind of garbage. Get the mental health help that you obviously need.
Obesity is 1000 tines more prevalent. Take your troll posts elsewhere. Young people read these posts. Your support of obesity only adds to society's number one killer. You obviously didn't read any of the attachments or do any research or you would know that the majority of elite female runners do not menstruate regularly. Facts don't fit your narrative.

You missed the entire point. Again, you don’t even coach at the top level. Nothing makes anything “okay” or “responsible”. But this is the price you pay for pushing your body to extreme limits. It isn’t just a distance runner thing, swimmers, tennis players, etc.
And this is the last place to take advice, a bunch of nobodies who know nothing about running, just use their “feelings” rather than scientific exercise science research.
My professor who was an WOMENS OLYMPIC SKIER would talk about this, and how women need to be educated on this type of stuff so they can make the right decision on what they want to sacrifice. That should be the real conversation, not the coach.
My coach has never told me to lose my period while running and it's a GOOD thing he hasn't. If you or your teammates are losing your periods, something is wrong and your/they're overtraining or underweight if not both
