The reality is that a bunch of coaches didn't want to reject the top runner in the state because of a technicality. He is the defending champ and the heavy favorite. Lesser runners would not have gotten the same treatment - but also I would argue that for lesser runners this issue may not have even been noticed.
where i grew up in TF you have to advance through a series of escalating meets by finishing......back then it was top 2. now i think it's 4. the sole exception these days is there is now a 9th place wildcard for the fastest regional 3rd place.
you're sick or hurt or running with pros that day -- you're done. i don't see how this should be any different. this is like the prestigious Dallas Cup soccer tournament used to fall during the HS soccer season here. you would routinely have good schools dump out of state contention because their kids would choose select when the tournament arrived, and their team plays weakened or shorthanded, or has to forfeit.
you are either sufficiently dedicated to school sports to advance or not. the teams dumping out would have been favorites too -- which is why their select team was playing in an elite tournament. but if you make a priorities decision you should be held to it.
