The lack of respect on this for a multiple-time American champion is disgraceful. Showing respect towards another human being costs you nothing. You may not understand the complexities of gender identity. You may be upset that the world is changing and you no longer feel in control of the narrative as part of the historical hegemony. But we’re talking about a fellow human being who is a champion of the sport that we all love and participate in, which makes our collective similarities far outnumber our differences. Nikki is non-binary. Respecting that and using the correlating pronouns doesn’t cost anything, it doesn’t lower your credit score, it won’t give you the flu, it won’t cause hurricanes, it won’t raise your cholesterol, and you don’t even have to wear a mask or get a vaccine to say it. It’s literally just using 4 letters instead of three. 3 consonants instead of two. It doesn’t even require an extra syllable. Stop being such babies about it.
if you want to project your mental illness onto the rest of society, you have to expect people to take issue with that. at best, and this is being overly charitable, we should reach a solution where the person with gender identity problems request others to use their preferred language, but everybody else retains the prerogative over what they ultimately say, with absolutely no potential repercussions.
a woman claiming to be a man will probably be entitled to various medications and this would probably be granted as a therapeutic use exemption, can anybody confirm?

What a load of rubbish ! most of the world isn't changing at all.Go outside the minority western countries that might(i stress might) accept non binaries, and the rest of the world would not accept them.Trans people can have a very hard time in many parts of the world. In some societies nikki would be forced to cover up,wear a hijab, and be a woman, whether she likes it or not.

Only thing implied was Shelbo would beat the brakes off of her.

The thing is there are NO complexities with gender identity. If you think there is, you have a mental health issue.

This is about a person who claims that people should be allowed to participate in sports categories based on identity, then competes in the women's category while forcing others to pretent that she's not a woman. Hypocrisy is one reason people are upset.
Another is that preferred "gender" pronouns are an effort to redefine EVERYBODY, not just the person requesting a pronoun based on feelings rather than sex. When people like Nikki suggest that they are somehow a special category because they feel different or are allegedly gender non-conforming, they are suggesting that others who do not identify out of their sex are somehow more basic, boring, conformist than they are. Gender pronouns are just a convoluted revival of old sexist tropes.
To be fair to Nikki: she is making sense of herself within the cultural categories available to her. Unfortunately, a substantial minority of people in Western and American culture have been sucked in by a narcissistic and authoritarian view of sex and gender, and they're threatening those who won't comply with stigmatizing labels and worse.
Hiltz got a lot of applause at the meet comparatively to many athletes. Good to know Letsrun haters are not indicative of the greater track fan sentiment.

The gender stuff is clearly a culture-bound syndrome. The problem is that the world is so connected now that this largely Western issue is rapidly taking hold in other places. Imagine how tempting it is to identify as man if you live somewhere like Iran, or even India.
Kara probably is motivated by a genuine desire to be respectful, but we all know the high stakes of "misgendering," whether by mistake or intentionally. American English does not have a singular, gender-neutral pronoun, and until very recently, everybody understood that pronouns were based on sex.
Didn't you say people use pronouns based on what they visually perceive? Did you change your opinion on this?
Do people check other people's chromosomes and internal organs to determine what pronoun they use?

Don't be obtuse. If poeple don't take massive doses of cross-sex hormones, you can clearly identify their sex in under a second, even when they're fully clothed. Here's a shocker: we also know the sex of strangers when we're talking to them on the phone, don't know their name, and have never seen them.

So people can identify this person's sex in under a second? (Yeah, she is holding a sign to let you know.)
