Sensational race by Nico!!! 12:57.1 ??? Wow. A great young runner with something left in the tank (he's improving). Running in his real events (5k/3k) he's a real threat. Maybe 7:32 next time out? I think so. Nice to see hard work pay off.
If you ever thought he was a miler, this ought to clarify things for you.
Remember it was less than 10 years ago that Galen Rupp, with a silver medal in the 10k, ran 13:0x for the American record on this same track. Now collegians are running just as fast and faster. Only things that have really changed since then? The footwear. Its not just the spikes in races, it's the shoes they train in as well.
The original Seth James DeMoor thread. It was a classic thread. Great running advice mixed with a good amount of humor. Sure some people took it too far, but he and his fans were too sensitive about it. You don’t see Theathletespecial crying about it.

For me I think it’s mostly the spikes. If the supershoes help you do more sessions sure that’s good, too but not at the same magnitude.

Training with shoes like the Vaporfly, which facilitate harder workouts, shorter recoveries, and fewer injuries, has a cumulative effect that, over several months and years, becomes more significant > than the immediate benefit provided by spikes like the Dragonfly in races. In essence, the impact of shoe choice is more profound in training than in racing.
He will break 3:50 just as Craig Mottram and Dave Moorcroft did before him. Neither of them had extraordinary speed. Look them up. Nico is only 21. When it's all said-and-done, he will run sub-12:45, sub-26:30 and sub-3:50 by the end of his career - and probably sooner than anyone expects.
Kick? You need a kick? When has that been a requirement? Kicks win races; they don't give you times under 3:50. But a superior VO2 engine does. He is easily a sub-3:50 miler at this very moment!
Nico will NEVER break 3:50 for the mile. It is not possible for him. I am sorry so many of you cannot grasp this.
Enlighten us Todie, what is the fastest Nico can ever run in the mile?
