…it doesn't mean that she's training with the group. It's pretty clear that she isn't …
Outside of her being a drug cheat, not much about Shelby’s actions or situation has been “pretty clear”.
We have past teammates saying she continued to work with the team post-ban. Why is it a “conspiracy” to ask if she still is?
Can you shed light on who she is consistently training with, how she’s being funded, etc? You know, since it’s pretty clear.
Unless it’s her parents, she’s not being funded. Whether it was deliberate, or accidental, she violated the terms of her contract, and Nike undoubtedly terminated it when she lost her appeal. There was also no clause in her contract that required Nike to pay her legal fees.
Professional sports are a business and Nike is not a charity.
I would argue loyalty means something in this world. I applaud Jerry for being loyal to his long term athlete rather than capitulating to the selfish demands of a foreign newcomer.
Defending and supporting and coaching a banned drug cheat... well I guess that is some kind of loyalty, yes. A sad, sickening one, but sure, let's put a positive spin on it.
And the athlete who wanted to stay away from the banned drug cheat is selfish? Now I've heard everything.
It’s not sad or sickening. It’s admirable loyalty. If I was an elite runner, I would want for a coach like Jerry who supports me in good times and bad times.
And remember they were fighting the case. Jerry believes Shelby is innocent. She was probably sabotaged. It’s appropriate in that context for him to support her.

Wow just wow. I would hate to have a coach who supports a drug cheat. Even worse, a coach who has a currently banned drug cheat join - I mean, coincidentally bump into - our training sessions, risking bans for my teammates and me.

She was also suspended while on the most successful US distance team, which has gone downhill significantly if not disintegrated since she left. I think Nike has a reason to keep her around or at least keep her mouth shut

There’s no evidence that the cheating was team wide. Do you believe every athlete on the team was agreeable to do so or that the ones that didn’t want to cheat would stay on the team and not turn whistle blower? Why would Nike want to keep an asset that has no marketability?
Unless Houlihan has videos and/or recordings, who would believe an admitted liar and drug cheat?

Not saying that’s what happened but the way BTC has changed looks strikingly similar to the dissolve of the NOP after Salazar was put under investigation. Everyone on the team was fully behind him but then people slowly started leaving until the team was nothing.
Is it just me or wouldn't there have been other BTC athletes there if it had been a coached session out at the lake? The fact that Hicks ran there and Shelby ran there is not really proof of anything like collaboration. "Doing a long tempo" isn't the kind of workout that only genius coaches can come up with...
I walked out my door today to run (at a normal time when runners go running) and at the first intersection I bumped into a former 2:27 marathoner who lives in my neighborhood. We ran for 20 minutes and then each went our own way. On the tail end of the same run, I bumped into another training partner finishing his run. The odds of bumping into good runners on good running routes on a Sunday in a town like Eugene are close to 100%.
Plus didn't Hicks start like 30 minutes after Shelby? So she'd have been five miles down the road. Not exactly what I call running "together."
p.s. I am not claiming guilt or innocence in her doping case, I am just saying Eugene is a small town and the popular routes are popular for a reason.
Failing a drug test does not make a runner a drug cheat, because failing a drug test does not give that person an advantage over other runners.
Likewise, supporting a person who failed a drug test does not make either of them drug cheats, because doing so does not give them an advantage over other runners.

* Does not give them an unfair advantage over other runners.
