Yes, I was a little surprised she got bronze. But that was before unknowns like Tigist Assefa come out of no where and bust out 2:12 marathons
That's why the Olympics are so important to Americans. No one's winning a major marathon anytime soon probably, but you can say you're an Olympian. People don't really expect you to medal, that's impressive already. More so to the common person than coming in 5th in London or Boston. Team USA swag is for life.

Some people on here really seem to lack basic human empathy. You can have the opinion that she shouldn't have continued in Chicago once she started hurting, AND still feel really sorry for her that her dream is, in the best-case scenario, deferred for another 4 years. These aren't mutually exclusive.

The sad thing for the sport is one of our top runners was so dependent on appearance fee money from one race that she felt she had to risk significant injury by finishing that marathon to collect a full paycheck.
I agree that super- editing a video of yourself crying and adding sad music is a bit…overly affected. Makes me take the whole thing less seriously personally. Still feel bad for her and I do think she was clearly one of our 3 best.

Show me a country (or a world) where SO many people INSIST on pretending that they have a personal connection with COMPLETE strangers - AND greatly enjoying it - and I'll show you a country that makes TONS of other stupid decisions. And many of them about far, far more important things. Alas, that's exactly what we have.
