So you're telling me Henry Wynne just ran a 14:07/5K (vdot equiv 64:36) but now a couple weeks later ran a 62:06 (equiv 13:33, 28:11). Jheez. Didn't realise he left the 1500m and became a distance guy all in one post-season....
Add this to the previous post about the unrealistic splits mid-course and we know all we need to know. This is very far from being legit, it's actually sad how much British Athletics, Athletics Weekly etc have all jumped at posting this all without proper due diligence
Faster than he was at the same race last year. Probably doesn’t mean a great deal for the year ahead in the 1500m, but a solid run for him either way.
Every time I see a Josh or Jakob thread, I'm bound to leave my best comments on it lol!
Like Rojo, I absolutely love both their athletic ability, and the fact that I find both very clean from drugs. Both are also quite good-looking, good masculinity and have great speed and strength versatility.
I think this performance means Josh is aiming to close in 53 off a 3:27 1500m race in Paris?
I don’t think the elevation drop is worth 2 full minutes. For a reference point Strava has the grade-adjusted pace that converts splits to what they estimate they would have been on a totally flat course. For the SD Holiday Half it’s 2-3 seconds per mile on most people’s Strava.
That said it looks like it may have been a slight tailwind too - I’m not sure how to calculate how much that’s worth so maybe that makes up the difference.
I ran the course yesterday. I had the course at 13.24 and others I was running with/around were 13.16 to 13.25. Total course length was ok.
Mile markers and timing mats for splits on the course were all over the place (they are every single year for this course- it’s infuriating). The timing mat for that 10 mile split was close to 1/2 mile short.
The course has 3-4 pretty significant downhills, 1 significant uphill at mile 1.5, and rollers for a good portion of the course. I’d guess that it runs 1-1.5 minutes fast for an elite runner, and probably more than that for the average 1:40-1:50 half marathoner.
Sub-58, why are you disrespecting him? Might run 56 and change.
The half-marathon may be Jakob's best event based on his testing. 5 years ago , people were saying based on his testing values, Jakob could easily break 60 in a half marathon. If Jakob ran a course that is 700 ft downhil in peak fitness, he might run 56 minutes as that type of drop is worth over 2 minutes (John Kellogg says 1.8 seconds for every 10 feet).
Think of it this way. Let's say Jakob is 45 seconds better htan Ryan Hall. That's 59 flat. Subtract a minute for the shoes and we are at 58 flat. Sub track 2 minutes for the course and we're at 56 flat. Hell I disrespected him.
I agree. Jakob is the one person in the history of the world who could run 3:27 (1500m) and 58:00 (HM) in the same season. He is the Sifan Hassan of men.
In 1976 John Walker entered the Rotorua marathon as a training run . He stopped after 22 miles with a big lead. That was all he planned to run . It would have been interesting to see what he would have run if he had finished.
damn, thats fast for a 3:29 flat runner. Absolute monster freak athlete.
Is it? Ignore the course and how fast do you think guys like webb (like 27:35) or centro(13:00) would have run half in? Maybe a few of the very speed based guys would struggle but I sort of expect most of them would be in this 4:40-4:50 mile pace range.
Now actually doing it is another story..
or that guy who ran a 3:28.81 and a 59:07.... what was his name again?

Sure, maybe you're right... but to what end? Is he trying to unseat Erik Sowinski as the world's top pacesetter? His championship performance record is a disappointment given his talent level.

I've run the race the last 3 years and can confirm everything said above.
The course is USATF certified and is absolutely the correct length. It is a point to point course primarily on a bike path and so is exactly the same course every year. Nearly everyone comes up long on Strava due to the inability to perfectly run every tangent.
Timing mats were clearly not placed correctly this year as my splits show that my 10 mile pace was 29 seconds lower than my 6 mile pace which is impossible, and my overall pace is back up closer to my 6 mile pace.
I am an old masters runner who is right around that 1:40 pace and my time on this course is usually about 90 seconds faster than other courses. Despite the large net downhill with the beginning hill in the first 1.5 miles and all the rollers there is between 350-375 feet of elevation gain.
there is a short uphill section at the beginning and then a LONG very gradual downhill until the last few miles. I remember splitting 33:18 for 10k before blowing up and finishing in 1:13 low. I doubt I could have run better than 34 -min for 10k on a flat course.
I ran a half marathon (pancake flat) 11 months ago this year in 1:13 low and with better fitness (32:49 10k a few weeks prior). maybe I could have run 1:12 with a little more training because I think the end of the race could have gone better instead of drifting in the 5:40s.
The San Diego course is fast. Probably 90 sec + faster than other courses but it's not like a 'REVEL' course. It's a fun race and cool they still give cash money prizes.
