World Athletics won't name an AOY but we will - Update: Kelvin Kiptum and Faith Kipyegon are our AOYs

I am not surprised. World records/bests in two barely run events, plus a silver and a gold don't quite match the achievements of the four male finalists. 3:27s? Still slower than the top 3 without super spikes. A comparison with Hassan is irrelevant.

I vote for Kiptum and Houlihan - who really should be there instead of Hassan what with her great time trials and honest interviews.

In the unlikely event that LR doesn't correct that huge oversight, I vote for Kipyegon.

I agree with this idea, but the poll needs improvement. Jakob Ingebritsen should be in consideration.

This year Jakob

-Won world gold and silver medals

-Set a 2 mile world record in dominating fashion

-came within a second of the mile world record, widely regarded as one of the steepest records in track and field

-ran barely over a second over the 1500 world record, he set a European record running faster than Coe, Cram, etc. ever did

-set a world record in the 2000

3 world records, 2 world championship medals, and 2 continental records isn't enough to be in the running for AOY?

Not true. Instead of three world records, it was 1 world record (2000 m) and 1 world best (2 miles). How do you get to 3?

He was left out because the nominated four were arguably more successful, e.g. more impressive world records (than an improvement by 1.6 seconds - 0.6% - in a rarely run event), or 3 gold instead of 1 gold and 1 silver. No one (so far) said Jakob wasn't super successful this year.

Given the dearth of such information and advocacy on LRC, I must therefore feel like a God sent or a gift from the heavens here.

I very much enjoyed the rise of Yared Nuguse. We have a true medal contender in the 1500m and a star to support in the US. I love me some Cole Hocker, but the ceiling for Yared seems limitless. The way his season started by shocking everyone in that 3k to the final mile at pre was great to see. Hope he stays healthy.

I also really liked Mu in the 1500 at USAs her leading getting 3rd in that race showed her amazing talent.

Yes that was another good race but if you remember Mu actually was 2nd.

Because they had a contest to see who was the best 1500m runner in the world and that contest was won by some “next guy”. Can’t be the athlete of the year if you’re not even the 1500m runner of the year.
