Having a heart attack at this age, especially an ex-elite athlete is highly unusual. I'm shocked at how many people are trying to nomrliase this.

I was in high school when John Nuttall arrived at Iowa State. I still fondly remember watching him run at the Drake Relays. My brother knew him a little bit and he seemed to be a very descent person. I have little knowledge of him after he left Iowa State but I did see his Commonwealth Games bronze medal performance. Had he not been injured when he arrived at ISU I have no doubt he would have been a two time NCAA cross country champion. He was really good on grass and mud. Thanks for the memories.

Same thing happened to my running cousin at a similar age while out on a training run. He didn’t drink or smoke and had no heart disease in the family. Bad things just happen sometimes.

Same thing.
59 year old former high level performer, 13+, sub 2.20.
Not raced in over decade, but still stayed racing fit.
Was contemplating running as 60 year old to challenge sub 5 mile.
Finished hill workout. Next morning suffered unrelenting esophageal pain. Drove to emergency straight away.
STEMI (widowmaker).
Stented, survived.
No bypass, as arteries 90% clear.
Was sent to same athletic cardiac rehab clinic as O'Donnell.
Being fit saved my life. Survival rate for LAD widowmaker is <10%.
No detectable damage.
Most severe challenge has been psychological.
For my entire life I've felt invincible with outlier strength.
Thought of leaving my family was haunting and endless.
Terribly sad for Mr.Nuttal and his family. Nothing will replace him. He was a stud.

Dr Roger Hackney (former steeplechaser) has been studying the high incidence of heart problems in distance runners for years. (Way before COVID). Also been on a sort of crusade for runners especially those who trained at a world class level get checked. Strokes seem more common than heart attacks in this group but both seem to evaluated
im sure Hackney would be happy to talk to let’s run about it
