Even though Plainfield South missed an autoqualifying spot by a few points, gotta give them credit for reloading so well after only returning 2 varsity guys from last year (third returner was injured).

Speaking of which Boeger didn't run NXR. I wonder if the extended time off will allow him to run NXN if South gets an at-large, which I believe they should.
Bandukwala did a nice job of kicking into 5th place & a trip to NXN. I feel kind of bad for the guy who ended up 6th, I'm sure he didn't anticipate getting kicked past in the end b/c the top five were so far out in front, but Bandu beat him fair & square. You gotta anticipate the kickers, brah!
That was Sam Richuiiti from Dublin Jerome (OH). He typically has a savage kick, but I think he was going for the win - to his ultimate detriment. He nudged to the lead at 600, and then swung wide (and back) on the final straight, trying to find that path to victory. Had he "settled" for a safer, top 5 approach with 600 to go, I think he would've held off the other guy. I can't fault his guts though. Sort of like Pre going for the win in '72 instead of playing it safe and guaranteeing a medal. I hope Sam can pick up a wild card...

Well, Bandu is a sub 50 open 400 runner, 1:53 and 4:09 and closed the state 1600 last spring with a 55 last lap so if Sam has a better kick I'd like to see it.

Well, if you watch the video, you can see the Sam tries to respond to Bandukwala, it just was too late; Bandukwala was like a roaring freight train down that last stretch. Lol. So, it does look like Sam from Ohio has a kick, he just wasn't aware - granted I don't think you can hear ANYTHING over the roar of the crowd at the finish line at the regional race!
oh I just looked it up, Sam Ricchiuti is in 11th grade. I don't feel bad he get nipped at the wire anymore. He has another chance if he doesn't get a wild card, but hopefully he does get in. nice race overall.

I didn't say he has a better kick. Just that it's a damn good one. He was fried though when Bandu passed him in the final 20 meters. He had nothing left. My main point was he that he put it all out there to go with the leaders to begin with, and then going for the dub with 600 left. Bandu kicked well, but I'm guessing he may wonder what he left out there. Could he have beaten Todd if he'd had the stones to be there among the final five as they bpass by the starting line? We'll never know.
I’m proud of everyone who made it but we are wrong to think the last position was secured based on a tactical move over 3miles of racing. It was the result of someone fading in the last 2 meters and not realizing anyone was near them until it was too late.

I hope Sam gets the spot too. Running thru the line at these fast meets is a coachable skill and even more important at NCAA level. Of course we are all human and usually all learn this the hard way. These 48 1:49 guys just come out of nowhere.
I coasted in for the win in my state mile, only to be pipped at the line by 2 guys out in lane 5, to end up 3rd.
Watch the finish, Green jersey guy was absolutely toast and kept looking back. He physically could not move any faster and eventual 5th place noticed 6th place looking back and hunted him down. What are the odds 6th place gets in? It helps that Heartland shouldn't get any individual at large qualifiers.

I don't think Green jersey was absolutely toast. This is what I think happened:
Green jersey (Sam) looked back & saw how far ahead he was. Then he thought to himself, "I'm safe, I'm in fifth place," and eased up. But he didn't realize it was Bandukwala (search milesplit viral video from last track season), and that was his big mistake.
If Sam doesn't make it to NXN, he will just have to learn from learn from this. don't ease up when 1:49 800m is behind you in the homestretch.

I don't know the two runners at all and their strengths or weaknesses, just hypothesizing with this video. I'm not sure why he would keep looking back and just coast it in, I'm hoping he can count to 5 or 6 and realize he has to get across that line. I think his legs and just locked up with lactic acid and he was done, similar to how Young's did at NXN and Aaron Sahlman just blew by him to eventually win.

This is correct. I've been watching Sam run since 7th grade. I've ever seen him coast or not run through the line. He was spent. Done. Taking the lead with 600 left and pushing ahead took everything he had. He was on fumes, hoping to hold onto 5th. And obv could not. It's silly to suggest he "didnt recognize the 49 guy" coming up behind him. His failure to hold him off had nothing to do with effort or awareness.
