The are few legit reasons to want a dog. Mainly rural things, like you need someone to help move your sheep or guard your farm. That is where dogs should be, close to the other animals.
Dog ownership jumped the shark when they bred the miniature and toy ones. Those are an affront to nature and a menace to society. Whoever owns one is completely lacking in ethics. They keep them in cities, apartments, even bring them on trains, planes and buses, which are no place for a dog. They get legal permission to bring them anywhere by declaring mental illness so it becomes a "support animal." Even though it is not trained to behave decently like a real professional support dog! Outta hand.
I love my dog. He’s dirty as hell and he’s grown a little grouchy in his later years, but he is my buddy. He turned 14 in August, if you can believe it.
He devoted his life to protecting my 3 kids. Follows them around everywhere and acts like the dog on Peter Pan. When my kids play soccer and basketball, the dog is all-time defense and has honestly made them all better players. He’s been an important part of our family even though he’s a dog. I know we’re on borrowed time but it’s going to hurt like hell when he goes.
Yes, they’re dirty and loud and a nuisance and even a liability, but they’re worth it. Go pet your dog right now.
Posting to be part of an "anti-dog" thread. Haha. My dog has more friends, and a better life than me, (and you) by far. Too bad she will die in about 10 years. Joke is on you, Blue!
You’re doing it wrong. My wife and I take about five or six trips per year, including one international vacation. We have a technician from the vet’s office dog sit at our house while we’re gone. Our dog is always excited to see her. It’s a perfect setup: our dog gets to stay in his comfort zone while we travel, the sitter makes good money, and we don’t have to worry because if there are any issues we know our dog is in great hands.
We also have a doggy door so our dog can come and go as he pleases. We love our full life with our dog.
I am 60 years old and learned at a young age that if you have a dog you have given up on everything that I enjoy. You can’t travel abroad. Putting a dog in a kennel is abusive and asking family or friends to dog sit lacks an understanding of others time. You chose the dog not others. Traveling domestically with a dog is the definition of rude. Your day revolves around what time the dog needs to go out or be fed or walked. All of these things are fine for those that have given up on having an enjoyable life.
The funny thing is you can replace “dog” with “kid” and it still makes sense. I had a kid and a dog. I have no problem getting my ex or ex mother in law to watch both when I travel.
it is really awful and many of these people dont know how to control or train their dogs leading to a real crisis of dogs being pests amd aggravating innocent runners, whether aggressive or friendly. people have no responsibility for their dogs.
Actually, we're pretty much living in a golden age for dog ownership. When I got my first dog, the average owner didn't know the first thing about training. Now, it's incredible how proven training methods have become mainstream. Reactive dogs used to be about 80% of what I saw in a city. People acted like it was normal for dogs to fight, and all dogs had to be kept apart. Now, I see very few reactive dogs, and they're very polite at socializing with strange dogs and people. I constantly see people with little treat pouches, using every walk as a training opportunity. In 2005, I can't recall every seeing someone do that unless I was at an obedience club or something.
You may only be seeing the better dog owners out in public walking their dogs. You are likely only seeing the more responsible owners that are actually making the time and effort to take their dogs for a walk and give them treats to reward good behavior. Those owners tend to take their dogs out in relatively more crowded public places.
There are still many other irresponsible dog owners that do not train their dogs very well if at all. They never walk their dogs choosing instead to keep them chained up, locked in the house, stuck inside a fenced yard, or they just let their dogs run loose.
The less responsible owners tend to take their poorly trained dogs out to less crowded areas, if they take them out at all. Those less crowded areas include country roads, federal land trails, lesser used county parks, etc. These owners know their dogs are untrained and can't be managed. These owners are likely to have their dogs on a leash, pick up dog poop, or care much if their dog aggravates other people, wildlife or dogs.

"They ..."; "They ..."; "They ...";
Uhhhhh.. OK. That kind of dog ownership is questionable. If more people on here care to defend it, I'll leave that to them.
But that's what you call "dog ownership" writ large. Not my way of going about things. I'd have my dog s**t on your logic, but (1) that's not how we go about our business, and (2) the s**t would be sullied by proximity to your logic.
I hope things get better. Hang in there. If I read you correctly, you have regrets about not doing things and are blaming it on a dog. Never wish a day away. Get out there and enjoy life. It isn’t too late.

This is a classic representation of the main demographic divide on LetsRun. The amount of disposable income subtly referenced is breathtaking.
Not hating on that gang or anything, it’s just mind blowing that a running message board glues together near or already retired upper middle class white dudes that benefitted from the 90s with the broke generation about to inherit a society stripped of any semblance of the socioeconomic infrastructure that they lived under.
