You are right, he took a wrong turn and came from the wrong direction (though he did get all the pages). I just didn't want to go too far in the weeds on it.

Any of the Sports Illustrated running related cover photos from the late 60s early 70s. Ryan, Prefontaine, Shorter.
These are iconic because photos of and articles about these runners were prominently featured in what was arguably the leading sports media publication in the US at that time. It was another era when larger percentages of US sports fans cared about distance running almost as much as sports such as football, baseball, etc.
