Grant Fisher has two American records. That puts him ahead of someone who's not the best-ever American tight end.
On the other hand, Travis Kelce may become the first man in the Universe to impossibly make Taylor Swift happy. If so, he'll be a household name and celebrity for years to come. Or, he may fail spectacularly enough be immortally written into a hit break up song, written by the talent of our generation. Either would make him a legend in his own right.
Many are quick to point out that football is not as popular as track and field, is not played in front of a global audience, and has not been around as long. That's exactly why it is more difficult to say something like "Grant Fischer is better at track than Travis Kelce is at football."
Globally, track has so much more to compare from.
This means that purely from a statistical context, it will always be harder to say any great track and field athlete is better any great football player. Football, on the other hand, has not been around as long, it has a smaller audience, and is globally less popular.
As a result, fewer people play it now and fewer people have played it historically (i.e., it is easier to be better).
This is absolutely a no contest. Travis Kelce is better at his position in football than Grant Fischer at his event in track mainly because it's easier to be the best at your position in football than it is to be the best in your event in track.

The Fact that Fisher has 3 (north) America record pretty much negates your point. He is the best ever at those events. Meanwhile, Kelce is simply the best currently at his position
Grant Fisher placed 5th in the Olympics and owns several North American records.
Travis Kelce twice was on a team of 50+ players, which defeated the other teams of 50+ players in an American only championship.
Grant Fisher was the 5th best player at his position on the world’s largest stage
Travis Kelce was the best player at his position on the world’s largest stage.
This sounds good but is silly. The NFL is a QB competition. The team with the best QB could have the world's crappiest TE and still win on the world's largest stage.

Nobody is talking about team wins this is about the stats/numbers that Kelce is putting up, he is heading towards all the TE records right now and in time will hold all of them.
Holding any NFL record far more impressive than anything in distant running.

In the haunted streets of Nashville, where shadows danced to a mournful tune, a fateful encounter occurred. Grant Fisher, a denizen of the track, and Taylor Swift, a songstress with a heart as deep as the Tennessee River, found themselves in an unexpected rendezvous. The night was shrouded in melancholy, as they mingled at a charity soiree, and whispered secrets only the night could hear. The moonlight, a pale specter, bore witness to their shared passions, weaving an enigmatic connection that was as haunting as it was enthralling.
Travis Kelce, a football titan, watched from the shadows, realizing that in the symphony of life, sometimes one must bow to the discordant notes of the heart. In this darkened corner of Nashville, where love and fate converged like spirits in the night, their tale unfolded—a tale of love's lamentations and passions that defied the grave.
The argument that because football is only an American sport and not a global sport so it's automatically Fisher is not a great one because of how many athletes play in the NFL. If you take the total number people on an NFL roster (not including practice squad) multiplied by the number of teams you get around 1700 players. Travis Kelce was ranked #4 overall entering the 2023 season. (
Looking at world athletics there are 1069 athletes listed with times in the 5K and 10K for 2022 (under 13:51 and 29:10 respectively). Grant Fisher was #4 at worlds, so pretty similar to Kelce but in a SMALLER pool of athletes.
Both are great in their sport, but if we're talking about legends for the rest of their lives and beyond I'm going Travis Kelce.

To everyone making arguments like this.
Let's assume the whole world played American football. Do you really think there would be stilll be anyone better than Kelce? It doesn't strike me that we are losing a lot of TE talent simply because American football isn't big in China, India or Brazil.

1) Only a very small percentage of Americans were given the opportunity to see if they could become a star football player.
Estimate- Kelce would be about 50th in USA if football had broad based exposure like sprinting (or soccer in Europe or S America).
2) The USA has some genetic diversity, so maybe we should punch above our weight. Still we wouldn't have more than 10% of the worlds best.
Estimate - 50 × 10 = 500.
So...Kelce might be the equivalent of the 500th best sprinter in the world. (I am not sure how that compares with Grant Fisher).

Correction to your post.
Grant Fisher currently holds the American records in the outdoor 3k, 5k, 10k. The road record in the 5k and is part of the team record in the 4xmile that makes 5 American records now. I would not be surprised to see him regain the indoor 3k and 5k records he held last year (which would equal 7 American records). I also would not be surprised to see him get the road 8k, 10k and half marathon American records if he gives the roads a go. That would total 10 American records. Maybe not held all at the same time, it’s interesting to think about though.
I can’t think of any American track and field athlete ever having that kind of range and talent to potentially hold that many American records.
By the way, if this Travis guy can’t make Taylor Swift happy, maybe Grant can.
Kelce competes against some of the best athletes in the world though
* some of the best in the US
I understand your point but ...
I can find four or five guys in the world who can defeat Grant Fisher, 5000m or 10000m.
Go to N.B.A., any soccer team in the world, N.H.L., M.L.B., professional boxing, javelin throwers or discus throwers (elite javelin throwers &/ or discus throwers tend to be close to N.C.A.A. D-1 & N.F.L. size TEs). Are you going to be able to find five men anywhere in the world who could make Travis Kelce a backup TE?

Steve Prefontaine held every AR from 2k to 10k at the time of his death. Thank you for making me feel old.
There's loads of other guys with the talent to hold records over a range of distances even if they never quite did it. The most obvious ones are kennedy, lagat, and rupp
I think it depends on how narrow you put your focus.
If their respective "sports" for Fisher is the 10K then he got 4th in the World, so that is pretty tough to beat. BUT Kelce probably does it, because his respective sport is being an NFL Tight End in which currently he is #1 in the world or atleast has been recently.
Bottom line, for their respective sports they are both SUPER high.
I agree, but I still think you all are missing a key piece. Grant is NOT the 4th or 5th best all time, just right now. Kelce is the best of all time. Its not close between the two for that reason.
