That goes back to when a lot of schools didn't have college programs in women's athletics or those programs were greatly neglected relative to men's sports.

At least half of them lose their interest in women's sports as soon as trans and intersex athletes are excluded. Those people also have something in common, like their oppositions to same sex marriage and abortion.

I played co-ed softball which had males and females competing.
Little league had girls and boys competing at least 40+ years ago without issue.
