Teachers are necessary. Attorneys are a product of an artificially complex system that keeps them in work.
The public school system is an artificially complex system that keeps a lot of people in work, too. From the excess administrators at the top to the underpaid office, custodial, and auxiliary staff. And while teaching is necessary it can come from credentialed professionals AND parents and community skilled craftspeople and tradespeople, *as well.*
For most average people, there are absolutely times when a lawyer is valuable, but sometimes it is just gatekeeping. Most people with uncomplicated financial situations could write an OK will. Lots of small disputes can be handled in small claims court without lawyers. Generally, stuff that is non-adversarial shouldn't require an attorney in an ideal world.
However, for anything criminal defense, an attorney is a must. The criminal system is structured so that you would have to be an idiot to go at it alone.
For businesses, the calculus is very different. Just hire the expert (an attorney) to handle things and focus on making money in the business.

the purpose of lawyers is so that rich people can oppress poor people. don't have money? too bad. have an extreme argument against the other side? hopefully your lawyer won't suck the blood out of your bank account but i can assure you that they will. send an email? $95. reply to your lawyer's email with just a sentence that answers their question? $95. your lawyer claims to have work up at 4am in the morning and worked on your case all day? $6000. ask your lawyer for proof? get denied and that will be another $95. don't pay your lawyer? get your case dropped and lose all the money that you spent on it.
We have lawyers because we have insurance companies. When the sole purpose of an industry is to rip people off, and they do it professionally, we need someone to protect us.
I've done legal stuff on my own - small claims cases, various civil filings, real estate stuff. But when you get beyond the basics, legal codes are written in dense obfuscating language. So all these people go to school and torture themselves for a few years to specialize in some narrow alley of the code that they half understand.
Then they take the bar exam, and torture the rest of us.

OP - I’m a lawyer
OP: I am a lawyer, too (not from the US). Feel a bit sad, if you really see it like this as in my opinion it is a somewhat unfair take on lawyers.
1. Without law the society would be horrible and crash.
2. I work as criminal defense lawyer and when you go to court without lawyer you will usually not get the best possible result being able to read + being very smart will not be enough.
Just my 0.02, but of course I come from another country and might work in another part (crime cases).

Most lawyers don't deal with small people problems. They're busy helping rich people avoid paying taxes, corporations merge, and also avoid paying taxes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Those who deal with small people will know America really is filled with idiots. A lot of them file bankruptcy because they were busy buying shiny objects on credit card. Then there are your typical hood criminals. They're stupidest. You can't even trust their words to save their lives. So many of them lie to protect their ego until it comes to bite them later as the case moves on. If they told the truth from the start, they would have been in much better position. They can't accept the reality of their situation which is probably what got them there to start with.

What do you think law school teaches? It's a 3 year exercise in reading comprehension and critical thinking. You learn to interpret existing laws (reading comprehension) and apply them to a set of facts (critical thinking)
