Yeah and so to that point if we are agreeing he is a tier 2 guy, there is simply no way a "tier 2 guy" was running sub 3.50 a decade ago - hence an example of the marked evolution in the event. Or am I missing something?
With respect to Centro back in 21, it may not have been a big deal in the annuls of history (not even close to an AR), but it was a far more impressive run than he was given credit for. He was the reigning Olympic Champion and ran a lifetime PR - and he did it on a highschool track on a Friday night in front of 1200 people with some of the worst pacemaking I've ever seen (shout out to Bartlsmeyer who took it out way too hard in 54.0, then ran a 57.1 and stepped off the track in 2.20 through a km (dropping to 57.8 pace)). There were questions about his form and he ran the 5th fastest time by an American ever - ahead of some pretty damn good athletes. Hey I'm not a big Centro fan at all but I respect his ability and that performance was a good one and hence a big deal at the time. Just my opinion.
It was and he was in 3:31/3:48low shape at minimum. Botched pacemaking and a somewhat botched peak by him/Jerry. Unfortunate we didn’t see him in a more competitive, fast race as opposed to the contrived/poorly executed time trial.
