I can’t imagine the Ethiopian selection process helps. Ethiopian 5K runners have to maintain a high peak and race very regularly. They arrive at championships burnt out, and combine that with poor tactics

this is true. Aregawi was probably the fittest guy in the world in June - he front ran and dropped Cheptegei who ran 12:41 to his 12:40, presumably to guarantee his 5000m spot. Come the 10000m Cheptegei had peaked and then Aregawi gets 4th again
He always kicks way too hard at the bell, and down the back straight, leaving himself with absolutely nothing in the final 150m.

He was their top finisher in the 5,000. If anyone would be blacklisted it’d be Aregawi who takes up two slots and knowingly leaves it to a kick in slow races and always gets trounced the last lap.

Good point. If we consider what the women did in Budapest, they also underperformed - with the exception of that amazing 10K.
“The enemy’s defense is cracking, so the first rats run from the sinking Russian ship,” Fedorov said.
Amen.

And Welteji did well. There's no question that the Ethiopians system is flawed, but it's worth noting that Kejelcha had a pretty light racing schedule. As did Girma and Barega for another two. So you can maneuver around it. I think tactics in these finals is the bigger problem than overracing and a bad selection process (though they don't help).
He seems to be the African version of David Bedford and Ron Clarke. Great runners who set multiple distance world records by highly underperformed in major championships!
Kejelcha
3:47.01i
7:23.64
12:41.73
He is one of the greats but hasn’t been a clutch performer at the global championships.
He is the asafa power of distance running

Even in this race he tries to pass Jakob ant 450 to go and instead of going into lane 1, he lets Jakob go right by him. Lose by .01 when you should’ve had the lead and made Jakob pass. He’s just a bad tactician.
