Is this the worst period for the 800m of all time?

in london 2012 olympics, 6 of the 8 runners ran their lifetime fastest 800m in that race. i regard this race as the greatest race of all time

I think it’s moreso that we just exited the golden era of the 800m.

We got so used to seeing multiple 1:42s and the occasional 1:41 every championship season for a while there, and people lost contact of just how good 1:42 is. 1:42 wins gold most years.

The men are too bunched as a group and there isn't a standout trait or personality. When the announcers aren't spotlighting one or two guys prior to the race then it's a lost era.

Contrast to the women where 1:58 or low 1:59 looks impressive during the season until you realize that type has no chance in a global final. They'll be gapped and typically not mentioned at all.
