Hmm. I see an August 9 post that’s a Dick’s/Nike ad that does begin with her stretching on a track. No indication it’s current or where it is and it’s an ad, not a candid.

Meanwhile, if the above post is accurate, we can thank the Ugandan athletics federation for confirming Mu’s plans for us.

I really hope this is accurate. How funny it would be to have the best info on American T&F coming out of Uganda.

it doesn't look confirmed. the article only quoted a comment about "contemplating" not running. maybe they don't understand the word contemplate through translation?

I don't have much to say about fashion, but I've known the modeling world and quite a number of professional models. With a few exceptions, I haven't known many unimpressive individuals who have become top models. And I think it's laughable to call modeling a "mindless and dead-end career that any talentless person could do." Top models (especially runway and fashion models) are usually very bright, savvy, and keenly aware of how short their careers can be and how a single inch in height can determine whether they have a chance to succeed or not. ("[A]ny talentless person" couldn't do it; an almost talentless 7-foot man has a better chance of a multimillion-dollar NBA contract than an almost talentless 6-foot female has of receiving a six-figure modeling contract.) They also know that they have to plan very far in advance to succeed in whatever career they choose after they start the inevitable slide down the modeling hierarchy. Runners, on the other hand, can be remarkably delusional about their chances of success, even as they drop in the rankings, and many of them seem to have no clear goals about what they're going to do after they decline into nothing more than pacemaker and also-rans in third-rate races.

Mu, of course, is different, because she's already proven that she's one of the greatest female middle-distance runners and probably talents, whereas I haven't seen much to suggest that she would have much of a career in modeling. But despite all of the chatter, I also haven't seen her say anything serious about giving up running in her prime to go into modeling, where the usual career path is to (1) go back to school and retrain in another field (good luck with that), (2) marry a rich guy (a popular alternative), (3) become an entrepreneur in beauty products and promotions, and (4) become a serious actress (which is an extremely hard field to succeed in without personal connections already in place).

I've always wondered: "Is Athing Mu update?" Is this some LRC shtick or are that many people on these boards grammatically-challenged? I sure hope for the former, but, if not, that does explain much about the current state of our country.

It is the former, but why it continues to be perpetuated is just usually due to the sadness of the lives of the posters, much like saying “discus” instead of discuss. Many of these posters are easily amused and lack anything remotely resembling wit, so this is their version.

The fact that nobody knows for sure this late in the game is still super bizarre. The fact that she/her team ignores the fact that she has fans that are invested in her is odd. Surely dropping a message to her supporters to say that she is ready and prepared to participate would be easy.

Par for the course for an athlete under the direction of Kersee the Chemist. Expect something suspiciously astounding or unexpectedly disappointing. Nothing in between.
