I’m not a fan of Rapinoe nor many of the players. I can choose to look at a group and decide if I like them and want them to win. This is a group that has whined for years about unequal pay despite that not being the case relative to earnings. Like it or not, the women’s team from the US became the dominant team in the world precisely because the opportunity to play women’s soccer was embraced by our great nation at a higher rate than virtually any other country. There was very little competition around the world contrary to the Men’s game where the whole world plays way more seriously than our men. That’s just a fact. Soccer is still not even close to football in the US. Women’s soccer is at the top of the food chain in women’s sports in the US. Admittedly, much of that is due to the once loved and respected USWNT.

But this USA team is very unlikeable and for me it begins with Rapinoe and her push for gender equality. And the men's team has had to cave to the nonsense. These women get paid waaay more than they deserve. Not to mention her addition to them team was not based on playing form. And for her to get playing time over the others was ridiculous. She didn't deserve to be on the team or on the field (strictly from a playing stand point) so I'm glad the team lost , in part, to her inability to contribute and her missed penalty. And her laughing after the miss?
This team needs to dump the vets and assume a new identity.

I agree — people expected them to lose and they did lose so haters will do their victory laps, but they actually played much better today than they had in the group stage. Sweden’s goalie had a great game though, and I think certain aging players on the US still held the team back as they had in the group. If Rose Lavelle had been available I think she could have done enough to swing the game the US’s way. The result is also very harsh on Naeher who both saved a penalty and scored one in the shootout, and only let the winner in by about a millimeter on an unlikely deflection after she seemed to have saved it initially. But the Swedish goalie didn’t save any of our three missed shots in the shootout, our wounds were entirely self-inflicted. Looking forward to see which country steps up to claim the world title now that we’re out, and hoping the US brass can reform a title-contending squad around our younger talent.

Rapinoe wasn't the only one to miss one of the extra time free kicks. But she should not have been on the team - but other teams shared a similar mistake. Canada kept Christine Sinclair on theirs (and she too was beyond her expiry date), they went out in the group stage after winning the Olympics. Brazil also went out in the group stage while keeping Marta on their roster. Seems to me that many teams (countries) can't let go of their aging stars. Is that any different than Cristiano Ronaldo competing for Portugal last year at the men's world cup? Messi gets a pass as his team actually won the world cup - although he has retired this year to Miami (of all places - in a joke of a league). At least Ronaldo went to the LIV version of football (soccer to yanks).
