This is literally what people mean when they talk about Toxic Masculinity, and it shouldn't be celebrated. Sad, because usually the Scandinavians are ahead of us on these issues.
It’s called supreme confidence. Well earned, supreme confidence. How fragile are you? That’s what is sad.
He didn't really answer the question. Just said "I like to run fast." But didn't say whether he thinks he's vulnerable without pacers.
"Thanks for being the pacemaker" -Jake Wightman
Jakob took the lead at 1:33 and played pacemaker.
Wightman eased by him with about 200 to go and was never threatened in the dash to the line.
Whether Jakob is vulnerable in a race without pacemakers is a fair question.
For him to reply with confidence and to suggest that he can burn everyone off is also fair, even if there is at least one high-profile case to the contrary.
Great Britain's Jake Wightman came from behind to pass heavy 1500m favorite and defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen on the final lap, holding on fo...
His response was more that practicing unpaced races wouldn’t help him in a championship final.
Would should he have done differently in last year’s 1500 final and would running unpaced races have helped?
Wightman didn’t win because he had more practice at non rabbitted races. In fact, he was perfectly paced in that race. Being very fit allowed him to win in a very fast time.
Tactics are overrated here. Usually the better runner in the day wins. Give Wightman credit.
It was a good interview. Maybe next time Lets run can take the opportunity to ask a better question with some insight. Same for the message boards as well.
Jakob could’ve also answered: “Did Tim Cheruiyot need a pace-free DL race in Doha for his buildup? No he just ran his own race and destroyed us in the Final.” Just because El Guerrouj was insecure about setting his own pace doesn’t mean Jakob has to be.
That strategy didn’t work out too well for Tim in the Olympics, or Jakob in WCs.

That just means he needs to be more fit to offset the drafting advantage that everyone else has. Certainly possible with the form he's been showing lately. Lead from the gun, or maybe we'll see him pull off something like El G in Athens.

Yes Tim was injured throughout 2021 and uncomfortable kicking and sprinting off the line. He slowed to 3:29 not because he led, but because his fitness/health were problems. Who knows how it would go had he been fully fit. The strategy still got him Silver. Jakob last year didn’t anticipate being challenged for the lead and Wightman being there. This year he aims to be fitter to burn off the speed guys and deter anyone who wants to make a move. It can work, deep as the field is.

I'm taking a victory lap. I'm so thrilled to see someone started a thread on it. 99% of the media might as well not even be at the meet or asking questions as they aren't going to ask anything remotely interesting of insightful.
Somehow, I was able to do that from thousands of miles away.
The timing of the question was perfect and that was pure coincidence. Jakob raved about rabbits and how they make a huge difference, and then guy asked him him if he's ever thought about trying a DL without rabbits and Jakob somehow proceeds to say there is no difference between Diamond League (rabbitted) and Worlds (unrabbitted), exposing a logical fallacy between the start and end of his interview.
Look I get why Jakob didn't love the question. He's in the form of his life. He just crushed his pb and the field. He wants there to be zero doubt in his mind and my question probably planted a tiny bit of doubt.
I honestly hope he pulls it off from the front but physics is real and drafting helps. Look at what happened to Kipchoge in Boston, the GOAT Tried to lead Boston into a headwind and flamed out.
Check out the WTW when it comes out on Tuesday but only 33% of the time in the 15 years from 2007-2022 has the guy with the fastest seasonal time in the global 1500 won the gold medal.
Rojo you are a genius. This was pure genius. BUT remember that when you start discussing physics that (some of us wonder if this is the Onion) no but Jakob actually was too far back to gain tremendous benefit from drafting for quite a bit of this race. He did derive some benefit and then there is also a psychological aspect which may, along with the physics you mention, play a role in Budapest. I think it is fair to question whether Jakob is going to win at Budapest but this is more complicated than having pacemakers or not.
Next year an amazing new Kenyan will storm onto the scene and get towed to 3:25 by pacesetter Jakob. Jakob will fade to 3:27. His cult will go nuts and melt down

I listened to your post race discussion and I thought it is a good point that in the WC final, it was Timothy who set up Jake's win by pestering Jakob and vying for the lead. Jakob probably lost more energy there than he cares to admit and it indicates that his rhythmic running style might be vulnerable to team tactics of disruption.
If OAC can get three guys in the final, watch out!
I thought it was a great question, and it was a very entertaining answer, even if he purposely did not exactly answer in the way that you desired. Jakob is great for the sport. And Letsrun just showed that they can be journalistic.

Not a bad logic here.
However, in Silesia's race, Jakob was pacing himself for a decent portion when the rabbits went out hard. He was not drafting for the entire 1200m as many make it seem.

How were you able to not understand his answer? He even answered in your language, despite it not being his mother toungue. Was it just too hard to pay attention to the short clip?
Let me explain it to you, take notes and read closely: it wouldn't make any difference to "practice without pacers" as every race he is the pacer. He is running without pacers every meet as he leads every meet for most of the 1500. If you look at any DL meet this year he is acting like a pacer for the rest of the field. That was his point. Got it?
Seriously Rojo, how are you not spending the extra effort to pay attention and understand his answer to your question?
Even if we overlook his humorous point, anyone should be able to think that a man that has run 4 unpaced world finals (with 4 semi finals), 1 unpaced olympic final (1 semi final), 4 unpaced european championships, 4 unpaced european championships (indoors), 2 unpaced world junior championships does not have a screaming need to practice running without pacers.
