There’s no reason to make kids learn maths past basic algebra. Prove me wrong. You can’t

"need" and "90% of people" can be said of every subject. School is not just to train you for a niche career that you think you'll have forever, but to get achieve a baseline level of understanding across a few areas.

Where I think you could have made a better argument:

1) I would have agreed if you targeted this to undergraduates, as I think it's a shame that that stage of education has become less targeted (and oftentimes is just an extension of high school). No reason for all the non-major classes besides extending the degree, and therefore the payments, for 4 years.

2) I think by and large if you graduate high school clearing the following low bar, then you will have attained the minimum technical abilities necessary to be successful: a. can the HS graduate make reasonable estimates, do basic mental math, and have some degree of abstract thinking about quantitative problems b. can the HS graduate understand other people's ideas presented through a variety of mediums c. can the HS graduate communicate ideas of their own through a variety of mediums

The common core requires only Algebra 1 and 2. You are so dumb.

I was very good at math. Not super useful.

A statistics logic and reasoning series would be way more useful.

Honestly most of our education is ridiculous.

We could be learning awesome subjects and even enjoy them such as personal finance, interpersonal relationships, team building, entrepreneurship, communication skills, love and relationships, world cultures and belief systems, an actual politics class not the crap we get, + all the practical skills like woodworking, auto shop, etc. Even a class on just little practical information, life skills like choosing insurance, financial planning, how to register you car, how to change a tire, etc. We'd come out of school so much more intelligent than we do now.

A math background isn't sufficient by itself but in the business world it's easy to know who has solved thousands of problems and who hasn't.

Where in my post did I say anything about anything you are talking about? I think you may be the unwise one here... you're just making things up.

I am not sure if there are any studies, but the general basis of understanding life is having a foundation in Mathematics (a plural by the way).

You can think of it this way. Maths makes it easier for you to understand physics, which makes it easier to understand Chemistry, in turn making Biochem easier, in turn making biology easier and so forth. You can do the same down any stream of science or tech, be it engineering, IT, architecture etc.

The reason we have so may stupid or ignorant people starts with a lack of basic maths understanding. It is the fault of both the student and the education system which does not know how to simplify it, make it enjoyable, and show how it affects other streams

I agree but the general public has basically no use for any of those subjects beyond a very basic understanding of them.

There could be a very general series of hey this is how the world works vs endless intense balancing of equations and sht. And that would be probably more useful/approachable

At least 90% of what I learned or spent time on in chemistry and physics has been completely useless to me. That's not a very efficient way to approach education.

Maybe reasoning can be taught more effectively without the only focus being mathematics? Maybe most kids are so bored with math that they get none of its so called real intentions.

What sciences don't use chem and physics? Or do you mean the social "sciences?"

All good with me except don't complain later about racism or whatever when only jobs that you can get is driving Uber around.

How do you expect us to evolve the human race knowledge long-term if we don't encourage the teachings of mathematics. We know not many people use it in their life, but we also do know that many do. So, it's there if you ever need it. It's there if you ever get bored and feel like you wanna learn something really really cool about the connections of our universe, or technology, or space. Because that's also the power that mathematics has.

Basic knowledge of statistics helped me to see through the BS and led me to my decision to avoid getting a covid "vaccine".

Ideally, this would be the benefit of math if it was taught in a way that encouraged deep understanding. However, most algebra, geometry, and especially calculus courses ask students to make heavy use of memorization of higher-level theorems and procedures. For example, AP calculus requires students to apply the fundamental theorem of calculus but not to understand the proof of it. Imo this is a terrible way to foster reasoning skills.

As a parent, there's a real simple answer to this. Because you need it in order to help your kids with their math homework in high school!
