this is exactly the case. Nothing personal. Alan did a great job while he was with us and his decision to put his family over his career is applaudable. Don’t see too many people doing that these days anymore.
How is "I don't feel like moving for a job that has a location in the name of the organization" synonymous with "putting family over career"? If it's not possible for his family to live anywhere but Boulder, then stop seeking out-of-state positions.
Corporations fire people all the time without any warning or justification. Athletes fire coaches all the time, and mostly for stupid and/or petty reasons. I have no issues with a coach just taking off.
Someone reported here weeks ago that this announcement was coming. The official end and announcement were probably planned for after nationals.
It sounds like a pretty sweet position to have to give up, but if the family/spouse is ultimately unwilling to relocate it's really not much of a choice.
1) I bet you are correct. He was out but they put off the announcement until after Nationals.
2) It could be as simple as "You need to move here. Our coach has to be here." "I can't do that... family won't/doesn't want to..." "OK, then we have to make a change."
But it shouldn’t have been a surprise to the Culpeppers unless they all have severe ADHD. Cruz moved to Flag, right? How do you not discuss this essential expectation for the position with your spouse before you even interview?
I don't know any particulars but I could see it playing down like this. You get offered the job, you discuss it with your spouse, and they say "yes we'll move at the end of the summer." (Looks like Culpepper got the job in May).
Then the school year ends, summer comes around, and you decide it's not best to uproot your kid who is in high school.
Then essentially it's not sustainable.
Idk - this looks like somebody who accepted a job knowing good and well he never planned on moving to Flagstaff. He arrogantly thought he could come in and do a good enough job to convince the Hoka higher ups to transplant at least part of the team (track) to Boulder. And also bamboozle Hoka into thinking his equally as flighty kid was worthy of a contract thus taking money away from someone more deserving.
Running/track and field breeds some of the most narcissistic athletes that fail to embrace the fact that it is not a profitable investment for their sponsors, but they are entitled to compensation that they do not actually create an ROI for their partner company. The Culpeppers are not insulated from this, there are quite a few others out there.
Similar to their previous engagements throughout their career, at the high school and college level, many of them behave like all decisions need to be based around them, forgetting that the coach has a job to retain come conference and NCAAs. Division 1 is a business, like anything else.
Why do so many athletes dope in our sport? It is extremely selfish, and steals from others.
Be reasonable when you judge the Culpeppers, there are way too many people in this sport that struggle to see the world outside of them.

Yeah, I have to feel bad for AC at this point, he's really trying to stay connected to the sport through coaching and isn't finding a great path forward. Before CG, he had a running store for a few years after retiring and was lucky to find a buyer before moving to SD. After CG, he was working for CU but in an admin capacity external to the AD. Then it was high school coaching though Cruz went to Shayne's school. The college coaching route seemingly wasn't right for him, either, with long hours and lots of routine travel. It looks like the family situation has him backed into a corner in Boulder, though I don't blame Shayne for not wanting him gone for long stretches with 3 teen boys at home. And now he has to update the resume and hit the proverbial bricks. He and Shayne were both highly accomplished pro athletes but in a sport that clearly doesn't give more than a few people the freedom of generational wealth.
Dude is 50 now and has to go looking for a new job, can’t find a consistent career. God that has to suck. I guess there’s always real estate agent or teaching and coaching at a school. All the Boulder Peter Pan Syndrome kids better take note of the downside of putting all your eggs into the running basket, and they aren’t even making Olympics teams.
How do you know that he hasn't already found another new coaching job at the college or elite level?
Probably at his kids HS. Many people told Mike and Ben that he was not a great hire. He is flaky and dishonest. Mike wanted to give him one more chance as he had a relationship with him back in his adidas days. No shoe company will touch him.
Unfortunately, I bought and read his book. He really doesn’t bring anything new to the table as far as training (all he really talks about in the book is “when I ran 2:09 in the marathon….) TBH I was surprised he was hired in the first place.
It's not about whether remote coaching works or not. Culpepper told them he was moving and didn't. Once he got the job he thought he could game them. He was wrong.

You seen housing prices in Boulder recently? Wouldn't call that "easy".
Honestly that is probably a large part of the reason. If Alan bought a house in Boulder in the early 2000s it could easily be worth 3-4x what he paid for it. If not more. No wonder he doesn't want to leave that.
