I have a scholarship to give. The best American girl that will accept this scholarship (after shooting the offer to damn near 100 girl) has a 1600 PR of 5:23. I can also give this same scholarship to a girl from the UK that has run 4:30 for 1500m as a documented U18 athlete. I am wrong for going for the better girl from across the pond or is the right thing to do Is give it to the 5:23 girl and hope she runs 5:00 by senior year which is still about 10 seconds slower than the British girl?

I have 2 seniors who broke 5 who are walking on at w different schools. They would likely switch if you are offering a scholarship.

...but you don't want to give it to the best one at 5:23. You want to psychoanalyze those 100, look at their training logs and study their gait. You can then determine that the scholarship should actually go to a 5:41 miler, who in 2 years will run 4:36 and make all-american in xc.

Are you serious? The coach should spend hours and hours and hours on a 100 different athletes and you think he or she can find the 5:41 athlete that will run 4:36 (which, btw, won't score in the conference or make to regionals)... like that's even possible even if the coach had the time. You must be joking.

This is a dumb debate. Coaches are paid to win XC and have their athletes score points on the track. There are no ncaa rules against bringing in legit international athletes so it's within the rules to bring them in.... especially if the majority of top US athletes only want to attend 20-25 different schools and the coach isn't at one of those 25 schools . Stop bashing the coach... she/he is just doing their job.

What were their times and where did they walk on? Did they consider a non-big name school?

Sorry, I was being facetious, but your reaction is proving my point. Several posters claim that really good coaches know how to find the diamond in the rough and coach them up. I claim it's 90% recruiting and most college surprise developers are just luck.

I notice you are only highlighting the programs with African foreign athletes. There are far more European athletes in the NCAA than African. Do those not count?

Also, let's not forget all the athletes from the Caribbean Islands - more than plenty of them in the NCAAs at both DI and DII levels for sure.

Not this guy again. No, you didn't contact enough schools if you feel like these girls would leave their situation for more money. You did them a disservice.

It's so weird when people come on this website and straight up lie about their athlete's lack of offers when they either aimed their sights too high or didn't actually reach out to many schools.

I am anxiously awaiting your response where you try to tell me you contacted "over 50 schools" and got no interest.

I do find it weird that state funded colleges are allowed to give scholarships to foreign students. Seems us tax money should go to us citizens?Maybe limit it to 10-20% of total scholarships per sport?

We should flip this around and ask why the US is so bad at developing internationally competitive junior distance runners. Even if you take the Africans out of the equation, Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc are outproducing the US in terms of quality U20 distance runners.

It’s not a dumb debate when you have a guy like Will Palmer recruiting a 30 year old Kenyan to race on the NCAA. It’s bad for college athletics. Especially when Will knows what he is doing and just looks the other way.

Completely the opposite situtlation isbreality. People come here and make up stuff about fake scholarships. People assume things or they believe their neighbor.

have been coaching for 25 years and have had about 100 girls go D1 for track. I know a bit more about the schools and recruiting standards than you. No schools are providing large scholarships for 5 minute girls. Very few are giving anything at all. I had one senior break 5 this spring and she is walking on at our state school. Very few schools responded to her. I have one junior who broke 5. She contacted every school in the B10 and ACC as well as about 20 additional schools in the MW and East Coast. She has heard back from a handful.
