What happens if Ky leaves, then later gets injured and can no longer satisfy his endorsement contract? Then he will not have his degree to fall back on and may not be able to afford the tuition to return. Unless an athlete can command a huge contract it just isn't worth taking the risk at this point.
If an athlete is looking at a multi-million dollar per year contract that is guaranteed for at least the current and next Olympic cycles, then yes the risk of getting injured at the university make it better to go pro. Ky is not in that position. It is simple mathematics, just run the numbers.
The team does indeed look absolutely stacked for next year.
All of them seem to return except Foster doesn’t have eligibility left. Moved to NYC and started working. Seems as though he must have tested positive last fall, and wasn’t allowed to compete, based off of interviews with coach smith.
Isn’t really a surprise someone fast got caught, they rarely test in the NCAA and tests are easy to get by (as proven every year with people getting caught that are tested regularly).
This is an interesting development. My guess is this gives him a whole year to adjust to training as a pro with BTC for the next Olympics. I believe Hicks will try to be on the British Olympic team next year.
They lose Devin Hart too. That's their normal 1, 4, 5 (was 1,3,4 at nationals with Sprout's injury/blow up).
Ky just ran 13:20.96 at Lausanne yesterday. Since he competes for Australia his selection to his national team is easy, so he can remain on the Stanford team without jeopardizing his selection. He could go pro but 13:20 these days is far down the rankings so he wouldn't get a good deal. He should remain in school. He is majoring in "Management Science and Engineering" - whatever that actually means it has the words "management" and "engineering" so having a Stanford degree with those two words on it will provide lifetime job opportunities.
Correction: Ky's PR is 13:11 in indoor, so he's a great runner. But he doesn't have his degree yet as many people have pointed out here. It is kind of tragic that he couldn't have at least stayed another half-season but maybe logistically it's hard to stick around when the season is over. A number of his teammates were banking on Fall of 2023 to be the big year

Agree with this. I'm a Stanford alum and, selfishly, I was hoping Charles would stick around for cross and the possibility of a 2nd individual title (which is somewhat historic in that not many guys have done it) and a team title. But he graduated and was signed by BTC, so can't begrudge him in the slightest. As for Ky, he's an awesome talent but it would make no sense for him to leave at this point without his degree. I don't necessarily see him at BTC -- Charles is more of a high-mileage strength-oriented grinder than Ky is, while Ky has speed that Charles lacks -- so I could see him at OAC if they're interested. Time will tell of course.

His 13:20 was outdoor, at a Diamond League event no less, and it got him a whopping 10th place, 40 seconds behind the winner. Better to do a bit more development at this point and earn a diploma that will open doors for the rest of his life.
