Many in my generation/age group (35-45) are just hoping time speeds up and we can hit retirement comfortably at 65 and coast. A lot of Boomers post on FB about how great retirement is!
Being mid-career but not yet at retirement is that weird space--you're years out from college but years away from actually retiring and having a slower-paced life.
I'm not even old and it feels like life was WAY different when I was in middle school / high school. Riding bikes all the time, constantly playing sports, no smart phones (used to send texts to my buddies on the motorola razor - that thing had an insane battery life). Call of Duty, Gears of War, Runescape (buyin gf).
Everything felt very in the moment with intense focus. These days I find I can barely focus on one thing for more than a minute or two. Tons of FOMO. I feel like I'm just checking things off a todo list instead of LIVING. *sigh*
Your aspirations as a kid were confined by parents and school etc. The goals in sports and life were well-defined.
The you become an adult and are expected to work 5 days a week. Your friends are scattered all over. The grind of life takes its toll and meeting up with anybody more than 30 mins away is a task.
Any goal in life is nebulous and never ends.
Solution: take control of your own life and give things definitions. Then follow through and own your destiny.
This, and losing friends naturally on social and in real life (just due to drift, nobody's fault).
I wish we could go to a 4-day workweek too; everyone is much more productive and happier.
A lot of social media/youtube now seems to be about maximizing efficiency, increasing earnings, etc. It's all money and stoicism... Bring me back to the glory days of crappy videos with terrible quality that were funny AF. Just random people doing random stuff for fun and a few laughs.

This. It's all slickly marketed and FOMO is a thing. I see it with running influencers too (mostly).

Agreed, we are in no mans land, career wise.
Old enough to be settled in and probably getting to the top of your career, but still a long ways from the finish line. You don't exactly want to slow down, but the idea of grinding out your career gets less appealing every day.
Pretty much all you can do on those days is keep things moving, and try not to get too complacent. Due to this, it can be a challenge to stay motivated some days.
