This isn’t correct. El Guerrouj ran 1:46.70 for his last 800m en route to Athens 1500 Gold with a finishing time of 3:34.18
Abdi Bile allegedly finished a last 800 in 1:46 at some champs.
And this is why champs are meh. Send these guys out slow enough and of course they can do a flying start 1:46.
Bile won in 3:36 in 1987. El G going 3:34 in 2004.
Interesting that they didn’t finish in 1:46 in the 2016 Games won in 3:50. Going out in 2:16 for the first 800 wasn’t slow enough to produce a 1:46 close out?

Nobody kicked until the last 500 in Rio…
This isn’t as impressive as El G/Lagat of course. They also went 51.91 the last lap and this was 52+ correct?
Is the thread title "Katir equals El Guerrouj" intended or unintended irony? An obvious, massive doper in Katir equaling the goat-doper in El G. In addition to the obvious, "a Moroccan Spaniard" might as well be "an East German Russian" for all-time dubiousness.

The most obvious thing is that Katir has the best body shape I have seen in all runners of the mile, this added to his style of stride.
He don't look at all like a Nordic running doll.
Without bias.

And just for clarity…his split was 1:46.0, and the final time was 3:36.80 which I believe is what was intended for the parenthetical.
Rui Silva actually ran his last 800 slightly faster than El Guerrouj in that 2004 Olympic race for bronze (1:46.3), but had been positioned further back.
Abdi was injured for 4 months that year (December-March) so yes one of the great performances of all time.

Of course it was, but they were all CHICKEN to try it. Usually they don't speed up until the bell.

Bile didn't do it on purpose either, he just always moves up on the 3rd lap, and someone decided to go with 2 laps out. That Jim Spivey guy who used to post here was in that race, ask him.
Jakob just elects to put everyone in oxygen debt. Even he admits his strength is at the 3000m to 2 mile distance. The guy strung out 8 laps average under 59.0 seconds per 400m. Nobody in the world is within 5 to 7 seconds of him at 2 miles. As long as he doesn’t let it dawdle and goes 1:55 or faster the first 800m he will suck the air out of EVERYONES lungs the last 700m…FACT
Agreed. This is one of the dumbest narratives and I see it brought up constantly. Jakob is only “slow” relative to someone like Wightman. He is faster than Katir, all the OAC guys, etc. The people suggesting he is the slowest guy in the field, couldn’t break 50 for 400, etc. are idiots.
I think every OAC guy would crush him in an open 200m...
oh well thank goodness jakob does the 1500 instead of the 200
