I can't believe that 1.46x is seen as an achievement for a 1500 runner. You would normally have to go back to the early 60's to see that being argued. Oh, I forgot - EPO changed all that in the '90's - since then the slowpokes seem to have dominated the 1500. Endurance is a wonderful thing.
I don't think 1:46 is seen as an achievement. It's more like, "ok, this is good enough. Now they are ready."
Also, Nurmi, Moorcraft and Keino did just fine as endurance based 1500 runners.

Exactly. Just like an 800 guy would be happy about running 45 in the 400. For the 15-5k guys, 1:46 is the requisite speed to run well in the 15 since they have better endurance than guys like Wightman or Cheruiyot. I doubt guys like Jakob, Katir or Nuguse can sniff much faster than 1:46, but they don't need to.
Cole is rounding into shape and could make the 1500 team USA.
As far as needing to run 1:45 over 800 to medal in the 1500, it may be true.
But I will point out, Steve Scott ran 1:46 at the Pre meet the same summer he ran a 3:47 mile, in '82. He only ran 1:48 over 800 in '83 at Pre, but went on to score a silver medal at the first WC in 1500. I know, ancient history... but still, don't count Hocker out.
Okay, he would've barely gotten 5th at NCAA outdoors. Sure 1:46.39 looks like a fast time, but it's not at top 100 time in the world, meaning, other than personal glory, his time has no implications in any meaningful race.

Pulease.... Comparing Man Bun to Steve Scott is the same as comparing to Ovett, Cram and Coe not to mention Walker, Coghlan, Flynn, Maree and Wessinhagge. That isnt ancient history either but there is no way in Hades Hocker would have beaten those guys coming off an injury in their time.
Stick to modern runners and all they have available to them including a regular dose of head to head competitions, not hiding out on some 4 x mile relay or puddy butting against 3rd tier athletes in meets you still have to LOOK up results for even in modern times.
Once he has proven himself ready by actually racing, beating top level competition, then running fast times, Ill start giving a little more consideration. Not after a 1:46 800 that has nothing to do with 1500m at the top of the game. Ridiculous.
Im actually hoping he doesnt get his ass handed to him and helps others get better along the way. If he makes a US team, great for him.

The difference is that 3rd lap. Jakob puts everyone in oxygen debt. 56/54 for a close is tough. He just needs to make sure the first 800 is not a jog fest. Anything under 1:56 the first 800 then Jakob applies the slow burn and it’s over
