Beamish is currently better than Tanner , Romo, and probably Hoare. Bad coaching has him running 5Ks and the SC. He won Penn Relays easily over Romo.
Ritz seems to be a great coach overall but I couldn’t agree more with this take. Beamish feels like he’s lost and without an event but he is SO DAMN GOOD at the 1500. NCAA title, PR, recent win. I’m not sure why they keep messing with it.
It looks like the foreigners in that group are slaves to help the coach collect bonuses for US records.
While we are saying Tanner shouldn't be an auto start, I'd say Nuguse shouldn't either. He has no high placed finishes in a championship meet since the his third at US Champs in 2021. He's run a few fast times, but he hasn't shown he's even the best american, he's just been able to get into some of these big races and beat his teammates. He's busy racing over in europe losing to jakob and time trialing with ollie and mario but dodging cooper and hobbs.
He will be racing Cooper and Hobbs soon enough at the US Champs. He doesn't need to race them now. Running fast DL meets against international competitors, many of whom will likely be in the WC final, is exactly what he should be doing.
Yet thats all the nuguse fans can talk about. Tanner has a better entry time than him
Nuguse literally got 2nd in his Diamond League debut a couple weeks ago. What are you talking about?
WTF? And he lost massively to a Jakob who was playing with the field in a watered down race. There were only three runners of note in that race (Hoare, Kipsang, Garcia) who were clearly not in shape yet. And on top of that he ran only 3:33 low. Come on!!
They should have B and even C races for the prestigious events such as the 1500m, as they used to in the 80's.
I mean look at tonight, you have 5 or 6 track races that people would tune in to watch, spread over 2 hours, and four of them are over in less than a minute.
It should be possible to have two 1500m races, and two 800m races, with even the B races being high quality. You can even have a promotion and relegation system, so that the first 3 in the B race automatically get added to the next DL A race, and the 3 at the back get demoted to the next B race.
I don't see why it is not possible to have two 1500m races in the space of 10 minutes. Keep the action flowing, instead of 5 minutes of the high-jump and shotput, and athletes warming up.
Oslo has a 3000m, a mile, a 5000m and a 1500m tonight, all on tv. In a two hour time frame, how much more distance running do you want?
I am not Coevett but they clearly say a 1500m and 800m B race, so two more races. I like the field events but there are too many early round jumps and throws shown in the two hour broadcast. 6 more minutes of track running is not difficult to fit in, and many Gold label meets and below manage this.
Well, Gourley destroyed Tanner in the millrose mile, so there's that.
Grethen, Habz and Lemi must have really good agents
Habz just ran 1:43 a few days ago and finished 4th in the Rabat diamond league in front of Garcia Romo and Abel Kipsang. He’s in the form of his life and seems ready to run 3:30 or even dip under it and there is absolutely no reason he shouldn’t be in the race.

I hear what you’re saying, but look at this schedule and rework it to fit an extra 800m and 1500m in the two hours this thing is on tv today

I think this is a troll post, but if I'm a meet organiser I'll look at Nuguse's recent record and see a 2nd place in a DL (losing only to Jakob), and a good win indoors, beating Mo Katir (another genuine world class talent). Just looking at that tells me Nuguse is going to be a good addition to my 1500 field who will help to make it a great race. It's never just about fast times, it's also about where you finish in races, and who you beat.

I don't think he's better than Hoare, but he should definitely be in the 1500. He missed the Olympic standard by a couple of tenths during the indoor season and that was in an uncompetitive race. I'm confident he would have run the standard at the LA Grand Prix but still messing around the steeple
I agree it's a bummer that Tanner doesn't have this opportunity, but I am cautious to support a clearly defined qualification system because lord knows this pendulum would swing the other way and a top athlete would be left out of a world class race because they didn't hit x, y, or z criteria.
Yeah, I tend to agree. It sounds like he should be in this race. Some endurance sports, like triathlon, use a rankings system to fill start lists. They're also dealing with much bigger fields and have other tiers of racing so if you can't make the top tier you compete in the middle tier until you move up. In T&F, the fields are smaller & you want to have some flexibility to give domestics runners a shot & to let in some wildcards who you think have potential or have strong past results or who you think would make the race interesting. The flip side of that exists for Tanner because he would crush everyone if he were entered into the domestic race. This is the right level for him to be competing at.
Maybe for distance races the top X number of athletes should get an invite. But even then I would cap that at a smaller number than Tanner's world rank. Maybe guarantee a lane to the top 4-6 (more?) in the world & roll down until the guaranteed slots are filled. I doubt it would roll to 11 at a lot of races. I can see race organizers not going for that because rankings lists aren't perfect and then some events aren't contested a ton so what do you do then.

One of the problems with A, B, and C races, is that some might turn tactical. People will argue that the winner of a B 800m in 1:43.9 is better than the winner of the a tactical A 800m in 1:44.5. The complaining would start all over again. Remember when Centro ran 3:50 ftw? People discredit that performance daily. What would they say if for some reason there had been a B heat in the Olympics that ran 3:34 for no medals?
Everyone is writing Grethen off as though Tanner should obviously be in the race over him.
What hasn't been mentioned is Grethen is an Olympic finalist. He's also competitive at European championships, indoor and out, which has large mainstream coverage in every European country - ie, the countries with the biggest audience for Oslo. Meanwhile Tanner has run marginally faster than Grethen, but most of the audience wouldn't have seen him race, and he hasn't made a major championship final yet. For the "lane fillers" Grethen is much more marketable than Tanner.
These are all great points and reasons that also trump the simple "my PR and world ranking are better than yours" narrative.

100%
With a clearly defined qualification system Faith Kipyegon would not have "qualified" for the Paris 5000m. It is an imperfect system but probably better than the alternative.

Well this is actually a motivating factor a lot of the time in particular for the "A" race. I have two good Zurich 800m stories, because for years Zurich had the A & B race that were both ballistic and almost as good as each other.
In 2004 the B race went out in 49.8 and Gregory Konchellah (aka Yusuf Kamel) ran 1.43.11 at like 6pm in the afternoon. There was serious chatter there that the A race would not go that fast but come 9.30pm Bungei goes out and runs 1.43.06 and when he was interviewed after he said he didn't want to run slower than the B race!
The other race was back from 1994 where the B race was a more standard 1.44 race but then a huge thunderstorm rolled in and it was torrential rain for the A race. Kipketer won in 1.46.12 which wouldn't have even been top 5 in the B race. Allegedly Zurich paid out the prize money equal for both races! (but they had the $$$ to back then).
Which is the segway to my ultimate point - the reason they don't have multiple elite races anymore is quite simple - money. Not enough money in the meets now to accommodate extra races and athletes, it's kind of sad but the way it is.

Perfect example. Paris was her first 5000m race in eight years.
You can't just wait until 72-48 hours before the race to announce that you wanna be in it!
Runners and groups and teams are signed up as far ahead as possible. These are NOT championship races with full fairness criteria, these are meets that have to put bums on seats in the stands and sell television broadcast to as many countries as possible.
You snooze, you loose. Only sure way to get in late on a DL meet is to put down a WC medal worthy performance in a minor meet. As it should be.

You can fill the majority of a field, say 75%, with clearly defined qualification while still leaving some discretionary spots
