A new study indicates that taking birth control pills during adolescence may significantly increase the risk of developing depression, particularly during the first two years.
Instead of telling them to stop taking the birth control pills after they become depressed, the doctors then put them on an SSRI to treat the depression.
That is the medical/pharmaceutical industrial conplex.
Legal weed has increased consumption among all ages, but mostly among young men as the stigma surrounding its use has declined. The side effect is amplified in developing minds that are more prone to depression and suicidal tendencies with habitual use, particularly with the high potency strains available today (4 times the THC content from when your parents were in college). It's simple probability and statistics. It's also why mass shootings are on the rise.
So amazed this connection isn’t made more often. Remember back in the day? Who smoked? Always the people who couldn’t control their emotions and they needed to smoke. maybe the smoking is what made a little bit of anxiety become out of control with the weed
im poorer than my parents despite making more than them
unlikely to ever own a house
knowing I have to work 40 hrs a week for the rest of my life with little to no purpose
dating apps and dating in general is terrible at the moment
everything in the media/news/politics is negative nowadays
It’s hard to feel motivated and excited about the future
I get that this is a troll post, but I can’t help myself:
1. social media is fun.
2. Your parents are supposed to have more money than you. That’s how inflation / investing works.
3. There are 1,000s of houses out there. Try and get one. I bought my first house last year. I found it on Zillow, contacted a realtor, and bought the house. It’s easy. You only think you can’t because someone told you you can’t.
4. Don’t work to work. Work for something else. When I go to work, it’s to buy food for my family, pay for my house, take trips, buy guitars, whatever.
5. I’ve never used a dating app. I met my wife in the real world because we had similar interests/goals/values.
6. The news is run by humans whose job it is to make you feel how they want you to feel. If news is negative, it’s because they want you to feel bad. Just turn it off.
7. you feeling unnoticed is a you problem. There is nothing that society or the government or whatever can change that is going to make you more motivated.
Jonathan Haidt wrote a good book about this a few years back. It's called 'The Coddling of the American Mind.'
The conclusion he reaches is that high school and college students are taught the exact opposite of what a cognitive behavioural therapist would advise when combatting trauma or conflict. That is: young people are taught to pay attention to their feelings at all times, that their subjection interpretation of interactions is 'their truth'; they're taught to catastrophise; and to seek an external authority to solve problems rather than confront them themselves.
This, in combination with 'helicopter parenting', which kicked in around the early 90s, and 'social media' - have placed young people in a situation where they've not developed the skills to solve their own conflicts (because they've always had parents hovering around to do that for them), whilst also occupying a social space in which they cannot turn off from conflict (their phone reminds them of such conflict at all times of the day).
Good answer. If people are left to figure their own stuff out, there's no time to be depressed. Depression is a mental disorder that only affects those that are having all their other needs met.
If you look at who takes the most anti-depressants in the US it's middle & upper class white women, the most cared for segment of our society.

Maybe they are depressed by their toxic husbands, who are coddled and let them raise the kids and do all the cooking and house chores, under the pretense that they (the husbands) have "men's jobs" that matter.

You’re a man, right? Since you are a man, you don’t realize that hormonal birth control is often prescribed in order to help with menstrual issues such as cramping & pain. The cramping can be so bad for some that it is debilitating.
I just saw this thread but have not read through it. WTF does “caudle” mean?
Parents are afraid to let their kids fail. So their environments, from an early age, are designed in ways that they are constantly winning. Problems are often solved for their kids immediately. Can't have their babies crying or complaining, right? Parents need to let their kids lose. Learning how to cope with losing early prevents them from being losers as adults.

You clearly do not have children. This is 100% imagined in your head.

Yeah, many of these people have never experience anything "bad" until they are 25 years old. No wonder they are entitled and they freak out when their employer asks them to do more, or doesn't give them perfect performance scores.

I have children and this is not imagined.
It is not all parents but there are many that are that way. You can see it at club soccer games, field hockey, etc, when kids lose and handle it very poorly. You can see it in the classroom when kids do poorly on an assignment or a test. Instead of instilling the concept of working hard in their child, some will blame the teacher instead.
Kids need to learn that they’re not always going to win, not always going to ace everything, or whatever. They need to learn to lose with grace and they need to learn the value of hard work to achieve what they want. Too many don’t learn those lessons.

I have three children, and I am a teacher. Kids lose and fail all the time. Losing is hard. Failing is hard. They deal with it though. There is nothing different about my kids generation and my own in that regard.
Be the change you want to see in the world, or whatever. If you think this is a big problem, then raise your kids to not be that way. That’s all you’re responsible for. Don’t moan and complain because you think other parents should raise their kids. Overwhelmingly, in my experience, these kids are not coddled and set up for failure. It’s a lie that someone said on the internet that some parents accept as truth. Those same parents always say, “except for my kids, who I am raising perfectly.” Get over yourself. Other people are doing it just as well as you are, and really whether they are or are not is not your business.
Mental toughness is developed through repeated exposure to hardship. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. Technology has created an environment in which our "hardship" consists of putting a pet down at a ripe old age whereas two hundred years ago, you could expect to lose a couple of children in your life.
We are soft and the therapeutic culture only exacerbates this issue. If you are a parent and wish to prepare your children for life, you need to push them into uncomfortable situations as often as possible. The idea is to give them as much difficulty as they can handle without breaking them, almost like how you try to achieve hypertrophy with a muscle without creating injury. The same obviously applies to adults.

I love these people who say,
"Other people are doing it just as well as you are, and really whether they are or are not is not your business."
Why is not my business? I live in this society that is being degraded in front of my eyes. You act like we have no place to judge the failings in others but you have the authority to judge what I am allowed to voice my opinion on? If you really want to live in this laissez faire world where nobody can opine on how others are doing things, how about you be the one to start and shut up.
U.S. government has allowed waste from nukes to be added to drinking water since circa 1947.
Both large political parties were for improved drinking water standards through Nixon. Since Nixon, both parties have tolerated greater amounts of toxins in drinking water.

Good lord - READ before posting.
You can continue to bury your head in the sand and deny the obvious, or you can continue to fall victim to the big cannabis lobby. Here are some more:
