I've said it before on here and I'll say it again, Sydney is not fast enough to get anywhere near Koch's WR. As fast as Sydney looked today for the first half of this race she was still a half second behind where Koch was at the 200m mark in her 400m record run, and Sydney was totally gassed from it. Koch regularly raced over 100m and 200m, and was the WR for 200m for ten years.
In general I don't think women's speed endurance is as good as men's, so for a woman to be able to run 47.60 for the 400 they are going to have to run the first 200 faster than a man would to run the same time, just as Koch did. We likely need a woman that can run the 200 in 21.6 or faster to break Koch's record. Sydney could spend a whole season running the 100 and 200 and I'm not sure she would ever get down to that kind of time. It's funny how all these women are almost 1.5 seconds away from the world record and people are talking about it like it's under threat, it's never been safer in all these years.
I watched the first 150 and thought, "Wow maybe they were waiting to race when she can break the 400 WR. This is is crazy fast." Then she blew up and I realized it was literally crazy fast.
I'll admit I kind of enjoyed watching her get walked down but as someone said earlier, we should celebrate her going for it. I just want her to race more than twice a year.

Nah. 21.7-21.8 is more than enough speed to break it. But it will also require a lot of strength. But yes that’s the weak point for McLaughlin. Obviously the strength is well past where it needs to be based off her 400 hurdles times, it’s just a matter of pacing and using the energy optimally
Yeah 21.7 or 21.8 200m speed might cut it, but Sydney is no where near that fast, if she was she could have easily won the women's 200 tonight, instead of finishing second in the 400. Her second 200 tonight was in 27 seconds! She was very nearly all out for that first 200 tonight in 22.7, she's no where near 21.8 speed.

Absolutely. I'm not knocking Sydney, I think she's great for the sport and I wish she'd race a lot more. The only thing I'm knocking is the absurdity that just because someone has the WR in the 400mH that they are suddenly a candidate to break the flat 400m record. We saw this same silliness play out with Warholm, he destroyed the 400mH record and when we finally see him in a flat 400m he's 2 seconds away from the WR.
When we finally see someone break the women's or the men's 400m WR, they will have world class 200m speed. The 400mH are almost counter productive in that regard, requiring the athlete to regularly extend their stride at the expense of turnover and the additional endurance required to race the 400mH comes at the expense of top speed.
It is obvious she gained some bulk in her legs which may be fine for the sprints, but it may hurt her if she is planning on defending her crown in the hurdles.
I don't blame her at all. It sounds like her coach controls everything. If you think this was ugly, she'll get better. OTOH Athing Mu will get murdered in the 1500.
You know, i cannot really agree with you on this. It IS her fault. A coach is not your dictator and if she is allowing him to control all aspects of her career instead of ¨coaching¨ her, then that is her fault. I hope she can regain control of her running soon.

There's no question Kersee's athletes' results are more about him than them.

Not saying this to pick on you but everyone here needs to shut the f--- up. Distance running isn't sprinting and when you guys are talking about "strength" here you're talking out your [please do not use profanity].

Must be a great contract if you are only required to race TWICE a year.
