For a resident, that’s $31,574 without buying books and for most majors (the tuition is always higher for certain programs—usually business, CS, some other niche majors—and that’s consistent at all state schools).
Pell will bring that down $7395/year (and this amount varies yearly, yet will increase with inflation, and full amount means something like under 65k for a family of 4). There are also Federal SEOG grants which I am less certain of regarding the limits and the math can get fuzzy since some award letters will just show you that lumped into a Pell. I’m not too dialed into Colorado yet the state should offer additional incentives, like this one (https://cof.college-assist.org/). That pays $116/credit hour so if you take a roughly 32 credit load for the year (16/semester) that’s another $3712 off.
If the kid got all these and nothing else, that’s 22 off the top and now we’re at a little over 9k so strict athletic aid is now less than .3 and I didn’t even do a deep dive for where they can find money.
They could have a residency grant for some of housing and that’s without special housing deals someone alluded to. Room and Board is more than tuition so that would bring the cost WAY down.
At any rate, hope that helped give more of a window into reality. If I had more time I could do a deeper dive into some of the other loopholes state-by-state yet some info will be less freely listed on the sites.
