I think it means that sometimes you get more up and more focused for certain races. I don't always put the same intensity into every race. Yes, I race hard, but when you know the opportunity is there to run a fast time and every else is expecting the same, then it seems to bring out the best of everyone competing.
If you showed up to run on a fast course and just ran your usual effort, then you would just run another average time for yourself and get beaten by those who were more focused.
If the course was short, then that sucks, because then all you can say is that you ran a short course. If you're going to put in the effort to race, then the race management ought to get the distance right. But that is a whole other thread about course management (short, long, wrong directions, etc...)
I hope you're not implying that the 3M was short, the race management was very serious about making sure everything was right and they did a great job of putting this race on.
Finally, I would love to have a cold-front with 20-30 mph winds blow thru the morning of the race, but we didn't.
