This is why the medical services and the athletic department should be separate. MDs and RDs reporting to coaches is trash and creates things like this.
Of course the coach is trying to get every ounce of talent out of and athlete, that's their job, which is why there has to be an adult in the room that is not beholden to him/her that can say, this is enough. And it is done.
If a member of the medical team says that an athlete cannot participate--for whatever reason--the conversation needs to be done. The NCAA should allow the student to stay on scholarship as long as they are doing what is required to recover and NOT have that scholarship count against the program.
In addition, coaches should not be penalized for utilizing science and best practices, which includes weight management. But, for all athletes, this needs to be more than lose some fat/weight. A real plan needs to be drawn up with monitoring and evaluation of the athlete's status.
Old-timers may hate this but no one asked you. Let's keep coaches and athletes as safe as possible.
