Now they didn't ban it for the reason I want it (along with the likes of facebook, twitter, etc.) banned particularly for minors - social media is a waste of time and is destroying teens' mental states (way worse to teens than smoking). They banned it because they fear the Chinese govt will get your data, but a ban is still a good thing.
This is sort of a blanket statement. It has to be a case-by-case basis. You can say that drinking too much sugary pop is destroying the health of kids. Should that mean that it is banned? The problem is that some people don't learn moderation. I personally don't use social media. I have never posted anything on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram but I can see how those platforms can be useful. I also see how they can be harmful. Again, moderation is the key.
You do realize letsrun and every other message board is just another variation of social media? I think you protest too much about not being in it...

The US Government can ban TikTok from their devices if there is evidence that user and device data can be taken by the Chinese government. This is not a ban on government employees using TikTok on their own devices, just doing it with government issued and connected devices. If a private company wants to block it, that is their choice.
But banning citizens from using TikTok and reading certain books is contrary to freedom of speech. It is thought policing. People can and should be informed of the dangers, but they should not be told by the government they cannot access information.
a point not yet made, but which i first heard on the 'risky business' computer security podcast.
they weren't so convinced about data privacy. but what turned their opinion around on the ban was the point that 0) loads to the millions of us citizens use tiktok, 1) it is essentially a news service, 2) it is based in china which means it is automatically controlled by the chinese government, and so 3) what gets on, gets seen (via the algorithm), or gets removed is under chinese gov't control.
the upshot: do you really want a chinese-controlled news channel to be the primary source of information for the us populace?
really ponder the algorithm and special-case'ing behind what gets seen.

I much more concerned about Americans getting their dis-information from Faux News - you know, like storming our Capitol and trying to overturn a democratic election.

" Gianforte believes in Young Earth creationism.[49][50] He has donated at least $290,000 to the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum, a Montana creationist museum that teaches visitors that the theory of evolution is false, that the Earth is about 6,000–6,400 years old, and that humans and dinosaurs coexisted during the same period.[51] The museum claims dinosaurs were aboard Noah's Ark, and that they likely went extinct 4,300 years ago during the great flood described in the Book of Genesis.[52][53][54][52] The Gianforte Family Foundation also donated a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton replica to the museum."
What the absolute fukk! How do they account for all of the skeletons, pottery, coins, thousands if not millions of items dated WAY before that? I mean it's not even like it's a close call! There's stuff from tens of thousands of years ago...
