If anything they should go the other way. If you can finish a mile and stand at the finish line pretending to dig a grave, you should get extra points. Schools should send a small band and a few cheerleaders to help razz the home team fans. Attendance would be way up.
Sure doesn’t seem like the DQs are stopping brawls… competitive people are gonna talk trash, and, yes, even fight sometimes. Let’s at least have rules that make sense while that happens.

Every argument against this is either 1) pearl-clutching, think-of-the-children, morality play bullsh*t which is counterproductive when applied to an entertainment product, 2) responding to arguments, claims, or unfounded assumptions my argument doesn’t rely on, or 3) based on assumptions about the rules or technical mechanics of the sport that would be easily addressed.
So, bring on the taunting! Just, this time with appropriate penalties…

As a high school 3200m runner I won every race my senior year that I ran except for the State Meet. I'd always stand behind the finish line and acknowledge the guys finishing behind me. Be it a hand shake or a pat on the back. It didn't even occur to me that I could act ghetto and show up my fellow competitors. If I had done that it would have shown a lack of sportsmanship on my part. And a DQ would be in order.
Also, high school rules require a DQ if the anchor of a relay team spikes the baton after finishing 2nd when they were upset they didn't win. I've even seen relay teams getting a DQ for spiking the baton after not because they won the race but simply because they broke their school record.
Sportsmanship is a real thing that many people have forgotten about. Now it's all about being ghetto. Ever watch NFL football? After touchdowns the scoring team acts like a bunch of drunken monkeys. They're suppose to be pros. Supposed to act like they've been there and done that. But sadly no, sportsmanship is no longer a thing. Now days taunting is the new form of sportsmanship.

....and you know this how? The fact that brawls occur after taunting...which is what a DQ is designed to prevent....is no evidence that the threat of a DQ doesn't work.

I think you are highlighting the REAL reason you don’t like professional sports. It’s not the taunting.
