I think the moral here is that several teams could have had matched or surpassed UW's results indoors if they wanted to. Like UW, they would have to peak their athletes early in the indoor season, sacrifice success in other events like the 800 and 3k, and find perfectly rabbited races on fast tracks. But that is DUMB.
It's better to peak late (as in peaking outdoors or at least the right part of the indoor season). It's better to run races to work on strategy and kicking, and it's better to have some runners focus on the 8 and some focus on the 3k instead of them all going for the mile.
This UW shouldn't be remembered as anywhere near the best mile group ever. They are nothing compared to 2009 Oregon. Even 2022 Wisconsin hasn't lost to them. Wisco even beat them in the indoor DMR without their best 1600m runner (who only ran the mile).
