We need socialized healthcare. The majority of our good college runners graduate with mid 5 figures of debt and need insurance. Our western society is too expensive to chase the dream. Those few that get a contract keep running, the others have money from mommy and daddy (which if I did I would have done the same). That’s it that is the talent pool.
There are 10 13:35 guys a year that fall into that zone. Not fast enough for a contract and no family money. Off to be a corporate slave.
Socialized healthcare has nothing to do with this. In fact, distance runners would be among the biggest losers in that arrangement, facing higher taxes while enjoying few if any of the benefits. More importantly, most elite talent deciding to move on after college are burnt out, moving on with their careers, or continuing with their education. Remember, collegiate athletes are students first, preparing for professional careers (most likely outside of their respective sports). Remember, those athletes have far more going on in their lives; they have other aspirations than being athletes, and remember, relatively few are even likely to have highly successful and lucrative athletic careers. Believe it or not, STEM students and the like are just as passionate (if not more passionate) about their fields as they are invested in their sports.
US men are better than any country in Europe at this point, that's all you can really say. We do precious little to support development here and we wind up with people willing to embrace near poverty level existence, like Fauble, at the top of the heap. Anyone unwilling to eke out a meager existence while at the same time flushing away great long-term career prospects with a college degree isn't going to stay in the sport. Sorry, but unless you come out of college with close to Rupp level achievement, you probably aren't going to find great success anyway. Better to simply get on with a career that contributes to society and chase OTQ if you want to linger around the sport a bit more.
If Mantz with multiple XC titles and 3:37 1500m wheels is barely good enough, I'm wondering who else qualifies as "most" LOL
Mantz ran a 2:10 because he gassed out trying to run with guys who's marathon PBs are 2:04 and under. He ran to win and came up short.
It was only his 2nd marathon and he probably would have beat his debut 2:08:16 if he runs his own race rather than trying to keep up with the top guys.
Imagine what Mantz could've ran if he trained as much as the others and didn't take his Sundays off

I can agree with that but I have to say Faubs came out on top. Boston is probably one of those courses where that strategy works. For Mantz, the lesson today will pay dividends in the future for him. I do say Mantz put on his big boy pants and tried to hang with the top and for that I can respect him. I think getting kicked in the ass today will make him better in the long run. The balls he had today will show in races to come.
I would add that a large percentage can stay on their parents' insurance until 26 (obviously not all of them). Also, running was my life and when I was 21 I would have said there is nothing in life I would enjoy more than to be a professional runner. By the end of my senior year I was beat up and mentally exhausted and within 2 years from graduating that running was such a big part of my life felt alien. I still follow the sport and enjoy it but I don't identify with the athletes or get excited about young runners with potential like I once did because my life perspective changed. I guarantee I couldn't have run 2:10 at my best but I also can't imagine I could train for 10 years after graduating without experiencing serious burnout. In your mid/late 20s I think many people start to feel an urge to move their life forward and chasing a running goal for little monetary reward is a tough way to do that.

Fauble got it from Rosario who got it from Sell who got it from Keith and Kevin. This isn't cracking cold fusion.
Mantz thought he was Kawauchi. Except he wasn't Kawauchi enough.
You don't have to have a better PR than a pro to criticize them. You don't need to be better than Lebron to criticize him. You don't have to be better than Mahomes to criticize him. You don't have to be better than Ronaldo to criticize him. Why do you have to be better than a pro runner to criticize them. Americans want to win, not consistently finish behind third world countries.

Hey Jerk, nobody is saying that but you don't say someone sucks because they tried to win and did not. You realize how stupid you sound?
A sport where the only people allowed to be fans and talk about it are 2:10 marathoners?
Should be a huge success.
I have never played organized football but I can still say "man Tom Brady threw 3 interception he stunk today."
I have never run 2:10 and Mantz sucked today. Is what it is
You are a total azzwipe.
Mantz did not "suck" today.
How many marathons have you raced? not jogged but raced?
Try listening to his interview then come back and tell me he sucked, you suck, thats who sucks, you MF'er
Scoreboard, dude. Mantz had the outcome of being slightly more patient than an Albertson or a Stinson. He's got Ed MF Eyestone coaching him and a better collegiate pedigree, he's got an edge on those guys. If it was a learning experience for Mantz then it wasn't the best race he could have run on the day. He got beat by the Burrito Bumpkin, there's no moral victory in that.

A QB that never wins, IE comes in first in their contest, is said to suck all the time. Listen to any local talk radio after a loss and the majority of the time just about everyone in the team will "suck" according to the fans. I've lived in Cincinnati, until the last few years our professional QB sucked and even after a loss now our superstar QB will be called garbage by at least one person.

Just shut up and crawl back into your ugly negative black hole.
It's embarrassing that you have enough nerve to post on a running message board

Not really the issue at hand here. I am currently a mid college guy and even now I feel like I don't have enough time in the day to focus on running to the peak of my abilities. And since I haven't reached any sort of status in the collegiate schene, people like me can't feasably continue running post collegiate. Its not a matter of not being able to afford heathcare, it is not being able to afford anthing. The running dream must stop because unlike to tip top of the sport, we can't focus on training 24/7, 365. That is what it takes to be elite in the sport(not counting the genetic elephant in the room). Without that 24/7 lifestyle, it's impossible. Socialized healthcare doesn't solve the problem and how others have already pointed out, makes the problem worse.
