This thread was inititially entitled, "W&W Kill It at Mt SAC Women's 1500". We changed it as many people might have assumed the OP meant William and Mary.
I wonder how much W&W train with the others or what their training looks like since they also run the 400m and others like Jenks run the 5k.
Can offer some insight here.
Ky Robinson was interviewed on an Australian podcast (Inside Running) back in February.
He was asked about his training.
Within his response, he mentioned that the women use lactate testing . . . finger tip blood draws . . . to gauge their training efforts.
They do this because JJ has decades of data he has collected coaching his female athletes . . . apparently dating way back to the days of Joetta and Hazel in the 1980s.
In theory, this prevents them from going too hard in practice, eventually resulting in injury. Virtually no injuries so far on this school year's xc and track teams, so looks like it's working and the accumulated weeks and months of training are now paying off.
Ky did mention that the men do not use lactate testing . . . he suggested the reason may be that Ricardo Santos/coach has not done lactate testing before so has no long-term database to rely upon.
Great insight thank you. Seems very smart to do that.
Juliette Whittaker would not be denied a second win at the 2023 Mt. SAC Relays. The Stanford frosh takes the 800m in 2:01.79 with teammate Roisin Willis 2nd i...
Stanford won the 1500 race, all five finished in top 7. Those Stanford runners are so powerful and intimidating that for anyone dares to compete against them, there is a 2 out 5 chance of dropping out in the middle of a race.
Speaking of range Michaela Rose 1:59 4:12 for the weekend. Perhaps headed for historic 400 hurdle - 3000m steeple double.
That’d be an impossible double, no? Didn’t an athlete just break the NCAA 400h and 400m record? (Her name is slipping me at the moment)
Edited to add: Britton Wilson is her name
I was mostly joking, but range is becoming absurd. We have 2 400 hurdlers basically running 2 flat in the 800 w/ Wilson and Rose. Galvydyte(?) is a 400h running the mile and xc for OSU.
We've had Sage Hurta go 54/1:57/4:25 + pac12 steeple champ, 4 x XC ALL-american. (no 400h)
Now Rose adds 4:12 1500m, so I just ponder, could she stretch that to 3k? For perspective Hurta's best NCAA 1500 was 4:08. Rose runs 4:12 in her off distance debut!
Different range than Mu, not better range. W & W are better 1500 runners right now, but Mu is a vastly superior 800 / 600 / 400 athlete. That will likely not change until Mu retires.

This is a great point. Mu is the defending Olympic and World Champion in the 800, all by the age of 20. Also an Olympic gold in the 4x4 where she ran the fastest split, 48.3 and she broke the American record in the 600 as a 16 year old.
The 4:16 1500 she ran for Texas A&M was in a dual meet vs. Texas. Sit and kick race with a 60 second last 400. There is a lot more there if she ever chooses to pursue that event. But why do it now given how great she is in the 800 and 400?
Mu had some pretty good range even back in high school. I believe she ran a 23.6 in the 200 in AAU and at some point around 18:30 in 5k XC on a difficult course.
I thought NC state would be the team to crush the Penn Relays 4×1500m but now I am not so sure.
if NC State had everyone at peak fitness they should win but Mareno is hurt and doesnt figure into this and i have a hard time believing that Savannah Shaw is close to her 4:16 PB fitness based on her past ~9 months. They would probably end up with a 4th in the 4:20's which would erase the advantage Tuohy would give them.
Stanford shown with a W DMR at Penn Relays but no 4x1500. No NC St in either

1:59.8 is the world standard, nice run from Watson makes that achievable for her.
It's not that easy. Sammy Watson ran a smart race with logical splits and was right against the rail most of the time. Her 2:01.98 is pretty close to the best she can do. Knocking another 2.2 seconds off that time to get the 1:59.8 world standard isn't likely.
