I have met Sondre and seen him interact with people in real life and real space. He’s a good guy. I’ve seen him come out to another teams practice at his facility and spend 2 hours talking to and giving advice to the vaulters of the other team. Just because he loves the pole vault and wanted to help.
it was an unfortunate incident where I don’t think the blame is on Sondre or the runners.
You could argue (poorly) that the runners should be dq'ed, as both the runners and the vaulters had priority on that strip of track, and the runners initiated contact.
How does meet management avoid an issue like this? The PV runway intentionally blends into the track, so that they can use the extended length. Once the prior person vaults, you have 2 minutes to jump. So, if all the vaulters use long run-ups, then there is pretty much always going to be someone standing on the track getting ready to jump. Some people might like to stand at their tape for a minute before going, in order to get in the right headspace. If that is part of the pole vault runway and they are on the clock, how are you going to tell them to move just because the starting official blew the gun even though the prior event was not finished.
You solve this problem by not running concurrent events. But each event have the spotlight for its own time.
Ain't nobody got time for that. Im a lifer and theres already too much wasted time at meets.
It's funny: I watched Sondre compete at Ivy League Heps a few weeks ago. His approach start was across the track and nearly outside of the Dartmouth field house, it was so long. But the meet officials held the prelim race heats until after Sondre did his attempts since hehad to cross the track and didn't want anyone to get run over. I don't think any other competitor in the competition had anything near the same approach length.
It shows how the next round of elite indoor tracks that would be constructed needs to incorporate longer runways for the field events, the athletes are getting that much faster in order to go that much higher.
Did you guys see his reaction? He looked pissed/put out. Dude, it was your fault. Stay off the damn track
His reaction was totally justified. He had been given time to use the extended runway by the officials and had runners crashing into him. Who wouldn't be surprised and their hands up.
Clearing 6 meters is harder than going sub 3:50 in the mile.
People only think it's difficult because 5 people have ever tried vaulting. It's simply not competitive, there are thousands of track athletes that could've gone 6 meters if they didn't think the event was dumb

I would bet everything I have that you could not pole vault 6 meters no matter how hard and long you trained. In fact, I doubt you or 99% of the other posters on letsrun could even jump 16'. The pole vault requires athletic abilities that few have.
Say the hold the race a minute for the jump. They’re not going to wait 10 minutes for the next jump.
Indoor track is a circus. But track before field, always.
They dont need to if the officials do their job and gives the field guys a green light when its safe. I don't get why this is do hard. The athletes focus on being athletes, the officials focus on making the meet run smoothly. This is should be a non issue.
Who cares what he cleared if there a race going on the track then stay off the f***king track
Nobody cares about a distance race, but thousands will watch a pole vaulter. It's actually on the track official for starting rhe race. The guy has 2 minutes to jump and that is his space.
I refuse to believe this is a serious comment. Can't stop activity on the track for 2 min for every PV attempt.
It should be disqualifying for a venue that the PV runway extends into the track

runners go by every 25 seconds idk how you could ever have comfortable time. if officials gave him a blanket "you're good," that's bad, but also on him to have some basic awareness of the fact that there's a race on the track.

Pole vault is the event that requires the least athleticism. Mondo can probably only run around a 10.5 in the 100m.
90% of pole vault is just practicing how to use a bigger pole.
His reaction seems totally justified assuming his annoyance was expressed towards the officials (who definitely messed up) and not the runners (who weren’t to blame).
Also, his reaction wasn’t even that strong. Who wouldn’t have some type of annoyance if you were suddenly run into unexpectedly? Even if it wasn’t justified I would have had an in-the-moment annoyance, and in this case it was very justified.

It absolutely stops a running event when it's close to an American record. It's on the official. And nobody really cares about distance races anyway at these meets. Most use it as time to go to the bathroom and get nachos.

Distance running is even worse. Not very difficult to go out and run or run circles on track. Anyone in the world can do this.
Seriously, what was that dude thinking?? Standing in lane 1 while a DMR race is going on, focusing on his jump and not getting out of the way. Ended up bumping two of the runners and then had the nerve to get mad at them. If you haven’t seen it, watch it
Do you know the situation? The officials informed the pole vaulter that they would delay the start until he had made his jump. He focused on his performance and consequently, did not hear the starting gun. Therefore, please refrain from criticizing him. He simply followed the instructions given to him, and even the officials apologized to him for the incident.
I hate that I know this, but… There is footage focusing on the pole vaulter on the nocontexttrack Instagram page. Scroll down a few posts, and you might have to swipe through a few pics.

Least athleticism? I fear this sort of comment was only aided by legalized drugs.

I was thinking this had to be part of the equation. Miscommunication between officials on what was happening.
He was standing on his apron at the of the pv runway, the start of the race encroached upon his space. And met him last year during NCAAs, he and his brother were super nice and approachable.
