We merged to threads into 1. The 1st was "Molly Seidel out of Nagoya Marahton?" and the 2nd was "Seidel withdraws from Nagoya - is she DONE?". Here is her instagram post explaining "pulled my glute badly at the half champs".
Molly isn't done. We get to see her battle the human side of being a pro athlete with determination. She battles depression and injuries but her talent remains especially under tough conditions. She's not done.
Carlos Lopes back in the early 80's. He was "done" for a while after the 76 Olympics the won World Cross, Olympics and had some great races by 1983-1986 or so.

It's possible for a great athlete to come back.
Yup. Seidel was “done” after college. Then she made the Olympic team and won a bronze medal. She seems to be struggling right now, but talent never goes away.
Meb was “done” after the 2007(8) trials in Central Park. Then he made two more Olympic teams, finished fourth in London Olympics, and won New York and Boston.
Molly has not met the Olympic Trials qualifying standard. She has not run under 2:37 in a marathon during the qualifying window of January 1st 2022 to present. She has also not run under 1:12 in the half marathon during the qualifying window of January 1st 2023.
Molly is currently only able to run the OT on a technicality of having been an Olympian in the last Games.
This means that 120 American Women have been able to do what Molly has not.
That being said I don’t think she makes it. Too much depth of talent. Though we do have a lot of wilting violets going into a likely muggy Orlando.
Sisson runs well in the heat/humidity. Her Olympic 10K Trials and three-peat at the 15K Champs in Jacksonville prove that. D'Amato too. But I guess Seidel did well too in Sappora.
I remember the BAA video last fall where Gault interviews her and she mentions being injured and then ramping up her mileage to 70+ miles her second week back and thinking this might not go as planned. Is Green still coaching her?
3:10+ mark in the video. 110 miles within her first month returning from injury. Quite a rush? Her and her coach know her injury history. Was this necessary?

That's a pretty sweet technicality; I'd take it.
And you might also rephrase your last point as: "This means that Molly has been able to do what no other American woman marathoner competing against her has done."
I don't think she is done, but I think one of the underlying issues affecting her is the mental aspect of racing (and fame). And there are different layers to that mental toughness that is required to train and race well. Going into a race as an underdog, where nobody really expects you to do well, is a totally different situation than being one of three women to ever medal in the Olympic marathon. That pressure trickles down into her training as well. Expectations all around her, and no better evidence of all that mental sh!te she has to deal with than this thread.
"The more you are humble, the more you become successful" E.K.
