The shame about this approach is that we may never actually see what he is truly capable of. If he keeps just adding 1cm at a time he may ultimately miss his peak performance as an athlete and instead of him reaching crazy, unfathonable heights like 6.50m he might end his career around 6.30m.
True. But he'll also end his career having earned a lot more money in a sport that generally doesn't pay it's athletes very well.
His networth is already estimated at around $5mil so he's got some financial comfort already. If he really focused on going as high as he could over the next 2-3 years, sure he might miss out on a few world record bonuses he could achieve in a more gradual manner but he's going to have the status of holding an almost untouchable world record. If he was to achieve that sort of sporting immortality he would probably end up earning a lot, lot more from speaking engagements and endorsements well after he retires.
