There are new coaches at her college but Wiley still considers the Johnsons to be her coaches. They are the reason why Wiley backed out of Colorado and so she is sticking with the Johnsons.
Huntington University is devoid of leadership. They ignored the obvious red flags of a sociopathic coach in 2019/2020. They hired the sociopath's wife to take over and allowed the wife to further manipulate kids in 2021/2022. And now in 2023, the current coaches/admin parade their kids around and expect everything will just go away and people will forget. How is this benefitting the student athletes? They are making this way worse because they refuse to stand up, be adults and accept the truth behind their failures.
It's obvious what they plan to do at NAIA nationals in coming weeks too. Replay 2020 when they rode two distance runners to a national title. How did that play out?
I watched the meet with my wife and sons. When I saw her leading, I mentioned the Huntington situation. They had never even heard the school name before. I called my parents last night to talk about the meet. They asked who the high school girl was leading the 1500. They had never heard of her or the college before. 95% of track fans watch meets and kniw nothing about things off of the track. Ask a high school track team of 100 boys and 100 girls and 10 coaches and you may find one or two who ate aware of the situation.
Ok but people in the running community know. Average person doesn't follow most doping scandals closely, they only know when it reaches lance armstrong levels.

He didn’t do anything “wrong”. I’d just say his mentality wasn’t necessarily about mentoring young adults. A lot of his runners probably liked him. He was just sort of a hard *ss and don’t think he understood he was dealing with young adults that were trying to figure out life. He took everything as you going against the training/ program when you were just going to him really looking for help. That was my experience at least. In the moment and for years after I blamed everything on myself. Looking back, I was a 19 year old kid that was home sick and probably didnt articulate things the best way. As I am now older, I can’t imagine being such a dbag to a 19 yr old that really didn’t do anything wrong. Everything I said to him was only to him. Never talked sh*t behind his back to the team. He probably thought I was though
usually when a 19 year old girl finishing 4th at USA’s in the 1500m, the message boards would go crazy. But no one is celebrating her because of her past. It’s sad honestly. I don’t think she should be viewed as someone to dislike. She just unfortunately met up with the wrong people who she viewed as her mentors. Some things are just out of her control, especially when you are young.

One of the worst things about this situation in my view is that she was an still is a victim -- and she always will be in the sense that she will be viewed like victims of the Chinese doping program: never able to succeed in the eyes of most reasonable observers because there is very credible evidence her exploitation has given her unfair advantages.

So yes, there is very much a Wiley scandal.
Do you think that other college runners treat Wiley poorly at meets because they care that Wiley fooled around with her coach? No!
They treat Wiley poorly because she chose to drop a highly rated D1 school (Colorado) to attend with a school connected to performance enhancing drugs, and said that that school was the best way for her to continue running at a high level.

This is why the story is so captivating. There are few good answers. Just lots of evidence of conflicts of interest, corruption at the highest levels of the University, doping and other law-breaking, and unfathomably bad decision-making. If it were just another story of creepy coach grooms and assaults teenager we would have stopped talking about a long time ago -- for better or for worse.
Sure she has new coaches, but it's the same old things. Everyone knows HU is still cheating. The new coach coaches under the guise of "God put me here" and "they love Christ". Except the only talks about how much $ he's getting paid, how much scholarship budget he has, his course, his facilities...All built on broken women. HU will get their reward; it's just too bad they keep hurting people in the meantime.
Man, she doesn't have an actually support network outside of this mess. Huntington, the town and university, has shaped her world view and she hasn't had the opportunity to get an outside prospective.

That's the main problem. Wiley's parents weren't very good so Wiley saw the Johnsons as a step up.
Now Wiley needs to find another coach or mentor that is a step up from the Johnsons and move on. Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.
When Wiley leaves her current situation, she'll likely need a ton of support, or she'll fall off a click. She's sheltered and shielded from the reality of what she's experiencing because of where she's living and the very small number of people that she's interacting with.
I don't like what she said about the other victims, but, she has genuinely been led to believe everything she's saying (remember, this started at the age of about 14).
I hope Wiley gets out if Huntingdon tomorrow, takes a break from running, gets a ton of support and mentoring and eventually lives a great life (with or without racing).
And finally, I understand why she's criticised and if you take her words literally, she deserves thr criticism. But I wish people would be lighter on her because nobody on this site knows the true extent of what's going on at Huntingdon and to Wiley.
