Does anyone know why he stopped working with his dad after last season? I don't remember seeing a video where he explains the switch but I don't watch every video.
it was a really quick talk he gave in during a random video that was along the lines of "hey guys, so I'm going to be trying something different after last season with my dad, and am actually going to be coached for a bit by Ari - he's got me doing this double thresh..."
you get the point. no detailed explanation, just flaked on his dad's training like he flaked on most of his training 'plans'
hardly "trusting the process"
He's desperate at this point, so he's going to fall for every new gimmick that comes along thinking it's "just the thing he's been missing." Double threshold just happens to be the current fad...AND HE HASN'T EVEN BEEN DOING THEM!
If he just followed his dad's plan, but introduced fast, anaerobic sessions earlier on in the season, he probably could have PR'd this year. Looking at his Strava, though, it's really hard to see what the thinking is.
His dad would just hammer repeats, repeats, repeats at some selected pace (with inadequate rest) that Spencer could not hit because he didn't have the wheels for the split nor the aerobic capacity to recover during the rest interval. Wanted him to repeat the workout weekly until he could hit the splits, because the splits meant X:XX fitness, thus achieving the goal of X:XX.
Ignored speed for months (a year?), never lifted. "Speed" was a 28 sec 200m before a bunch of 1k repeats. It is worth repeating that Brown ran a 49 400m in high school and probably can't run a 52 right now. Some minimal credit to him as he did some fast 100m strides in his last video. He SHOULD be doing a pure speed day with 20-60m reps @100%, but whatever.
It's so dumb because Georgetown training worked perfectly and he ignores that. Full-time runner, with no race plans, yet hasn't run a 200, 400, 800, 1k, or mile time trial in years, likely has no idea what his fitness actually is. I believe he is genuinely afraid to test it out, because he would run a 55 sec 400, or a 2:01 800, and KNOW that he is years away from regaining fitness he had no excuse for losing.
He is an extrovert with a discipline problem living in the cloudy PNW for 3 years, and he has 3 whole aquaintances, 2 of whom are spinning their wheels just as badly as him.

His training just doesn’t make sense. If you’re only gonna run 50 miles a week why not maintain some speed year round? I mean he could probably do 80 miles a week and still get fast 200’s in every week along with good threshold work like most high-level milers do.
I guess he just doesn’t feel like doing that though.
Agree. He also does not do enough mileage to justify not having a real job. More than enough time in the day to run as much as he does, work, and still maintain his youtube channel.

Yeah you can run 100M weeks and have a full time job for sure.
Spencer would have to move all the way up to elite marathoning and run 140M weeks before I'd accept that excuse from him
I was a late comer to TAS, started watching just when he joined the Brooks. I still haven’t watched the early stuff, kinda gradually going back and watching it backwards til I get to the beginning.
one thing I’ve noticed is that Spencer seemed to be the most motivated, and dedicated w/ his summer in Boulder in 2020 right before he joined the beast. He was Lean and just seemed happy and motivated. His videos since then have just seemed dreadful toward running.
this video stands out most, he was very strong w his speed here. Far cry from now. His experience w the beast seem to truly break him physically and mentally. I enjoy his stuff and hope he finds his way… but dude needs do some serious self reflecting.
