I know of one (triathlon). Unfortunately, the person wearing the swapped bib passed away. It took a while to ID the guy, after contacting the wrong family.
This has to be the most absurd reason not to wear someone else’s bib I’ve heard.
I don't care one bit about mules and transferring bibs and all that as long as they're not stealing prize money, and I think people that are really obsessed with it need to get a life.
However, it's comedy gold that one of the biggest running influencers didn't have the foresight to realize posting a bib that wasn't his might be a bad idea.
A) I think it falls more on the bib seller more than the secondary purchaser. The bib seller actually had to sign off on the fine print. The bib purchaser got the bib on the secondary market and very likely did not know that it was a violation of race rules and did not sign off on a disclaimer acknowledging it was a violation of race rules.
B) MI has become completely ridiculous to the point where I suspect it's simply being produced for attention seeking purposes. The author could have quietly contacted the race to have the runner DQ'ed, and published a piece about how selling bibs may be a violation of race rules without naming names.
It is genuinely hilarious that he cold be this dumb, or that he simply doesn't care
But a BQ is as good as prize money to some people; it certainly has great value. He's potentially taken someone else's spot in Boston by muling it. Who knows what this dope is capable of?
The rules are there for reasons, and it's reasonable for anyone participating to expect everyone else to abide by them.
The other thing that often happens is the person getting the bib is in the wrong division. So some 28 yo male wins the 55 yo women’s category. If you absolutely must bandit a race, don’t, but if you do don’t use a bib.
Sharing a bib might not seem like a big deal. But what if it's done to qualify for Boston, NYC or Olympic trials? Someone honest gets robbed of their rightfully earned chance. What if that's you or your friend?
What if it's done to set a (local, state) record in the wrong age group or gender and it's your record that's erased?
What if it bumps you out of an age group or masters award? You might not care, but some people would and that's their right.
Add to that the fact that there's no real reason anyone needs to borrow a bib.
Great job by Marathon Investigations on this one. It seems to me like it’s a bad idea to document your entire race and all of the training leading up to it on social media if you’re going to wear someone else’s bib. But then again I’m not an Instagram influencer.
Marathonguide.com must have posted the results before the DQ. He is still listed as finishing in 2:59:57 gun time. Can a person use a link to marathonguide results for Boston acceptance or do you need to use the race's website results? If so, he would be good.
It's funny because I saw him right before the race. It was 6:35 and Corral A closes at 6:45. I was entering the gates and he looked like he was panicking a little bit like he was looking for something. I thought it was because he needed to use the porta potties, but the line was too long to get it done in 10 minutes. Knowing what I know now, I am pretty sure it was because he was trying to sneak into Corral A. I saw him inside the corral like 10 mins later
1) How would the race or I get sued if I raced with someone else's bib? 2) Give 3 examples of this happening.
Still waiting...
Someone falls down and is injured and they aren't insured and didn't sign a waiver because they didn't sign up. Then they sue the race because they are an idiot. That's one off the top of my head.
Because he's a regular dude who works hard to achieve his personal goals, does shoe reviews, discusses training, meets cool people within the running community, documents his running journey, and overall is a good dude. This might be hard for some of you to understand, but you don't need to be an elite runner to be a cool person who people want to follow. I'm sorry, but some of the professional runners are weird. Like does anyone actually want to listen to Galen Rupp multiple times a week? No offense to Galen, but Matt Choi is significantly more outgoing and extroverted.
