Your post just shows how little you know or how this works. And I always love a different point of view.
Kessler has run 5 times faster than anyone from Stanford in that race and he is 19, he has 4 of the top 5 all time U20 1500 marks, plus a 2:16.x 1000M and a 1:46.x, when he was 19.
No one, not one guy has done that. Do your homework at least. Plus, the deal he got,is not a Drew Hunter deal, it is exponentially better.
Last year , which people on here are so stupid to think he underperformed at? He ran 3 more marks at U20 than any other guy in U.S. History. Plus, other than Centro winning a gold medal? Willis has won two, you would direct him to whom? Clayton Murphy's coach? He is 19 turning 20, not one guy has run that fast other than Ryun?
So, in your miopic world, he should go where no one could beat him? Beadlescomb ran IN the system and ran 3:52, 7:42 and 13:17, not a good enough training partner? Oh and 1:47 , I would say well rounded enough? On last years NCAA list? 5 guys, most way older ran faster than his 3:57.10 mile. When he was still 18.
Kessler ran 2:16.x 1000M, you know how many U20's have run faster ever? 5..Look it up. The wasteland that is Stanford? How many of those sure fire stars have run great? At least look it up.
Listening to guys like you make me feel not only smarter, but historically sounder. Give up. He would have improved? Where NAU? Please. Stanford? How did they do with.......Hausers..Gabe Jennings? What did he run? 3:35? You know why I go , on and on? Because guys I know, who do know...say you are a homer and not educated enough to know, WHAT it looks like.
.
Please, Stanford has produced more Olympians than anyone else, including the very B level track club.
Let’s look at Kessler’s 1500 progression:
2021: 3:34
2022: 3:36
2023: 3:39 equivalent
Obviously trending in the wrong direction. If he’s smart, he will relocate to Flagstaff or Palo Alto immediately.
Oh no! The collegiates have run faster times than Jakob this year! Jakob is doomed! The Stanford boys will surely sweep the world champs podium. Everyone knows it's all about January performances, nothing could change 6 months from now.
If you’ve been around you’d know college kids often run faster vs some pros in january. Beating Marty liquori is possible on the indoor circut, much harder outdoors
then again I think you know you’re talking about his season opener vs his last 2 seasons bests. Just trying to stir up trouble by making it seem like he’s regression.
I hope I’m wrong, I really do, but so far his pro career has been concerning. There’s no denying he ran slower in the 1500 last year than the year before. Now he can’t even make Stanford’s DMR team. It’s not looking good.
Ha ha! It stands out, which is great marketing. And made you ask, which is part of why. Brooks Beasts vs Very Kind Track Club seems like the ideal match-up. 😀
All I’m saying is the year he ran 3:34 outdoors he ran 3:57 indoors, and from what I gather, this 3:57 was a lot easier than that one.
It’s still early in the season. These races don’t really matter. He could’ve ran 6 minute mile today, all that matters is come the big races, he performs.
No one will be talking about this race next month, people will talk about USAs for the next decade
lol. couldn't be further from a drew hunter situation.
You’re not worried that Drew’s, excuse me, I mean Hobbs’, 1500 times keep regressing and that 3 collegians ran faster than him today? I am!
They don’t ‘keep regressing’. He has competed at this level for two years and he ran slower in the second year than the first, in large part down to injuries and still learning how to train in a way that will work for him specifically. He may not run faster than 3:34 this year but he definitely won’t regress
Another solid performance - sub 57 last 400. Beadlescomb good close (sub 56) to come second.
Seen through neutral glasses from the other side of the Dam I agree with the few on this thread who are not impressed by Kessler´s performances since his breakthrough season of 2021.
Kessler is soon 20 and is running far slower than 19 year´s old Hocker did in the early indoor season of 2021: 3:50.55.
Kessler´s 1000m recently was also a mediocre performance considering his 2021 level.
I agree with those who say that he still can improve substantially both in this season and in the coming years. But positive expectations are not enough. He has to prove himself.

Dude you might as well have just said “I don’t understand or pay attention to running” but barring Hobbs getting hurt he’s gonna prove a lot of people wrong. Even just watching his workouts from last year to this year there’s a massive difference. And my god he’s smooth
Some great takes in this thread....and some very one-sided opinions. Both "sides" can be right..... The college system does work for athletes. The vast majority of our elite athletes have gone through the college system and examples of success don't even need to be listed. Having said that, it does NOT mean that Hobbs should join a college team. Yes, he had an "average" year for him last year with injuries, etc; but that certainly does not mean that he needs to join a college team. He looks great early season this year, and I'm betting (like most) that he PR's in most events this year. Hobb decided to make some guaranteed money and work with the coach that has guided him to all his success thus far...sounds like a great plan. This coach also has a long h/o success at the Olympic level (unlike other high school coaches that have coached elite high school runners). That does NOT mean that he could not have found success through a college system.
Yes, Willis has retired, but the VNTC definitely seems to have improved....Flanagan, Avila, Grice, Beadlescomb, Ferlic, etc. Seems like a great group.
Kessler can´t prove me wrong by improving significantly since I wrote he can (se my third last sentence!). I hope he will will improve well in the future. It is always nice when young athletes succeed on the senior level.
I must admit that I am not following the workouts of various runners and especially not runners who are still sub-elite on the international scene.
But I follow the world class runners having had the luck to predict several developments in the middle and long distances recently. Fore example: I predicted about 1.5 years ago that Jakob would be the man to beat from the 1500m to the 5000m, that Timothy was (slightly) over the hill and that Cheptegei wouldn´t come back to his 2020 shape.
By the way: I have been a world class VETERAN 800m runner and have since then regularly been writing about running in different fora.

This. and Hobbs wiped the floor with Beadlscomb, Grice, Ferlic, etc.
3:57 in a controlled win is way more impressive than 3:57 for 6th place.

This is a poor comparison: Hocker was a college athlete, and would have had different goals as far as when to be in shape. Collegiates always outperform pros this early. As a pro Kessler does not need to be in shape for NCAAs.
