Have you ever logged on to a site like LetsRun and started a thread with the sole purpose of crapping on the joy of others rather than just keeping your trap shut? If so, can you explain why?
This is a discussion board, and in it, we discuss things. Some things might be of interest to you, some things might not be. This sounds like one that is of no interest to you. You could find another thread to be in.
For the topic at hand, no I would never wear a sports jersey with someone's name on it. I'm 48 years old and take pride in WHAT I DO and WHO I AM not what I "root for" or to celebrate some other person's accomplishments. Seriously, the more rabid a fan is, the more I know they have nothing going on in life. I don't mean to say they don't potentially have a good career, but who cares about that? Who are you outside of your job?
For me, a person that does things, not cheer for others.
Even the concept is off putting to me, as if I should give 2 craps about what a pro team does. I mean the players aren't even local, why would I care about the Columbus Bluejackets for instance (I'm from Columbus)?
Now I am into Mountain Biking, so I would concievably wear a brand jersey, say "Santa Cruz" if I rode Santa Cruz bikes. But the distinction is really that I am a direct participant in the sport, and when wearing it, it would be while on the bike.
Folks that wear Nascar jackets are the funniest of all. Clearly those people have never raced a car, and the jackets are literally covered with a dozen or more logos from all the sponsors. Imagine being such a sucker that you are walking around celebrating the fact you're a billboard for consumerism.
So basically you are an insecure narcissistic who can’t vicariously experience joy through others success?
What is really strange is your position pretty much amounts to people who watch and support pro sports are lame, yet you are posting this on a website dedicated to discussing pro-running.
Dude, just relax and have fun for other people for once. Celebrating others success won’t kill you.
Supporting a local sports team doesn’t come off as insecurity to me. Your being so bothered by it, does.
Supporting a local sports team is fine, but those who wear a jersey with another man's name on the back screams insecurity. These people are likely those who won't show up for work their team loses.
Who are you wearing righ now? lol
What’s insecure about it?
Being worked up about what other people are wearing that has no impact on you, just because you don’t understand it, is the definition of insecurity.
Both? What is so wrong about being a fan of another man?
In just about every sport I do I have a favourite player. I’ve got plenty of success in other domains of my life, so I’m not really threatened by the fact that Candid is a better skier than me, or Bekele is a better runner than me. At the end of the day, sports are literally just games.

Actually, that's not the definition of insecurity. lol
Is the reason you wear someone's jersey is that you want to be like them? Do you also get their autographs?

How is it insecure? People wear jerseys to support the team, obviously. That doesn’t mean all that wear jerseys want to be like that person or get their autograph, but some do.

You're the one getting worked up about this. I seem to have struck a nerve here. I did not intend to as I was just trying to understand the fascination of wearing another man's jersey. I apologize unreservedly for offending you.

There are other articles of clothing one can wear to support a team that doesn't isn't another man's jersey.
Do you think it is wierd for an adult to get another adult's autograph?
I never have, but I wouldn’t judge anyone who does or has. I’m a Yankees fan. Have been since a kid and grew up watching Mattingly. I’ve also never been to a game at Yankee Stadium. If I ever got the chance, I’d be tempted to buy a Mattingly jersey and wear it and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I don’t collect autographs but have no problem with people who do. What does that have to do with wearing a team jersey?

I'd wager adults who wear another man's jersey would have no problem trying to get another man's autograph. And again, it's not wearing a shirt with the team logo on it, but it is wearing another man's jersey.
If you're not secure enough in yourself that you have to pretend to be or fantasize about being another man by wearing his jersey, you're insecure.
Some things you leave behind in childhood. Wearing another person's jersey is one and getting another person's autograph is another.

Some false statements there:
1) That wearing a jersey with an athlete’s name on it means that you are pretending to be them or fantasize about being them.
2) That wearing a jersey with an athlete’s name on it means you want to get their autograph.
Both are false conclusions. That you are okay with wearing a jersey with the team’s name on it but that having a person’s name on it as well is a bridge too far is exactly why you are showing your insecurity. A secure person wouldn’t feel threatened by the fact an athlete’s name is on their shirt.
I went to a football game once and wore a jersey to support the team. I think wearing one at a stadium is fine. It's the same as getting dressed up for dinner or any occasion. You wear something to go with the occasion. But I agree wearing it around going shopping and stuff is weird.
I have not and will not. But I don't judge others for doing it.
I see both sides. Jerseys are pretty cool looking and the kid in me would like to wear one. However, the grown man in me takes a step back and realizes this is just some dude. Have some self-respect. So I don't.
I also take it a step further. When I'm watching a game I tend to ask myself why the heck am I watching other men play a game when I could be playing (doing something fun and challenging) myself. So I typically don't watch a lot of sports anymore.
But I honestly don't apply that same thinking to other people wearing jerseys. To each his own.
I don't always wear a sports team jersey with another persons name on my back, but when I do, it's usually to a fine dining establishment like Olive Garden or Outback Steakhouse.

How many other men's jersey's do you have?
I have three jerseys with an athlete’s name on it.
