He is a predator and not someone good coaches would identify with and take your advice. I understand the sentiment but just because he is an attractive man does not make him any less of an animal.
I am a high school coach and also coach a group of post collegiate athletes. Our athletic directors have been asleep with their oversight at our school. Horrible things happened with other teams at the school because of this. We are getting a new one now, so I am hoping for something better. At some point I will not be coaching, and it would make me happy to leave our program in good hands.
Coaches need to model the correct behavior giving athletes an education to when to have their guards up and when to find an exit strategy.
From my perspective an 18-year-old is a child. Many of them have just left their homes for the first time and some are under a great deal of pressure to hold the scholarships they have earned. I work with these kids right up until they go to college and in many ways, they are not ready. They need adults that model good behavior.
We need to all get on the same page and pressure athletic directors to stop being lazy and enforce a safe environment for athletes and coaches. Maybe these pervs will find other avenues but at least we can rid them out of athletics.
Your perspective is wrong and in legal standings 18 is an adult. They may be a young adult but they are adults. The fact that adults continue to call 18, 19, 20+ year old college students a child or kids is pathetic.
In no way do I condone any relationships due to institutional standards, power dynamics, manipulation, coercion etc, but they are not kids.
If I was an 18 year old man, and my track coach said "suck my d!ck or I'm cutting you and taking your scholarship." Im not suckin the D. I'm making a decision as an adult to either quit the team, report him, or just tell him to "F off" and go on about my business of school & running.

Not everyone is you. How is that difficult to understand.
So I guess you and several others here are ok with someone using a power imbalance to take advantage of others to satisfy their own perverted sexual needs?

Fine, we disagree on that point.
But the main point I have tried to make which was lost on you also is people using power dynamics to take advantage of others. That is exactly what happened in this situation.
If I am interpreting you and others correctly, you are saying it is the victims fault for not drawing a line and the coach should be allowed as to make sexual advances on his athletes throughout his career. I absolutely disagree with that.

That means they decided to suck the D. An adult made an adult decision, albeit an embarrassing and bad one.
Let's make the scenario something not sexual, what if the coach asked them to commit a crime? I take the same stance, I would tell the coach to F off, and I'd expect a woman to do the same (unless they were just down to commit a crime.)
Women are not children. I expect women to make the same decision as a man would if placed in the same situation.
There's nothing to disagree with me on, people 18+ are adults. The second part of my post clearly says I do not condone the behaviors of the coach. But you are 100% wrong for putting a child label on people with adult status.

I am happy to disagree with you. People like yourself are the reason these things happen.

It’s strange you are so passionate about that. I don’t always look to the law books to determine my stand on morality. The age of 18 as viewed by the law is arbitrary construct.
For most, the brain is not fully developed at that age. Physiologically of that is true, they are still children.

Why are we sending 18 year olds to wars then?
True. If 18 year olds adults are going to war, then they should be sexually abused also.

Correct. The brain isn’t fully developed at that point. So, while off topic, I sure hope you don’t support the ‘trans kids’ movement being pushed by school administrators. If you do, you’re a total hypocrite.
Because they are at their physical peak and have someone telling them what to do. We as a country decide when war is for the common good. That is exactly why we are saying that it is abuse when a coach takes advantage of an 18 year old.

I guess otter swam away. Here’s a 19yo that has been used by righteous politicians and media for propaganda purposes. Remember, her brain is not fully developed, but she’s an ‘authority’

No you cannot just say the brain isn’t developed yet. Not every 18 year old is the same. The predator knows who he can do that with and who he cannot do it with. I have two daughters and two sons, none of them were the same at 18. One of my daughters was more mature physically and mentally at 14 than the other was at 19. My sons were for sure immature to some degree at 18 than both of my daughters. Girls typically just mature earlier in general. But he knew who he could prey on, so the age number is irrelevant. One 18 year old may he ready for the war where as the next will never be. Hopefully basic training weeds that out.
this guy needs to be punished heavily for what he did, that takes work! He can’t just do that with any 18 year old he sought out the right one.
College students are consenting adults. Just live and let live.
They weren't consenting though sadly. It says he “was particularly fond of young girls” and “preyed upon them when they were most vulnerable.”
The article says:
He was sending “sexually charged messages” and frequently offering opportunities in exchange for sex. Additionally, Figueroa allegedly insisted on performing private massages, which often led to coerced sex, according to court documents. In one instance, Figueroa allegedly got the student-athlete drunk, coerced her into having unprotected sex and forced her to take a Plan B emergency contraception pill afterwards in order to prevent pregnancy, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that HCU “turned a blind eye” after several students spoke out against Figueroa’s alleged behavior. According to the suit, male student-athletes reported Figueroa for his preferential treatment of female student-athletes, but the university did nothing.
Sounds like a complete mess. Also sounds like a pattern of behaviour. But I agree with this poster that there is an imbalance in these situations which is why they are illegal. Not a good idea for coaches to get involved with athletes, just like it isn't a good idea for teachers to get involved with students, even if they are 18 or over.
