WTF is a 'gravel bike', anyway? A mountain bike with ridiculously large tires?
A "gravel bike" is exactly like what mountain bikes used to look like in the 1990s but the marketing teams of the bike companies really don't want anyone calling them 1990s mountain bikes because they have been pumping tons of advertising money into gravel bikes and races to make them seem new and hip. A gravel bike is for hipsters that cannot bunny hop a bike and do not have the skills to ride on a mountain bike on regular dirt trails.
This current marketing fad with "gravel bikes" started in the USA and I'm sure some ultra runners had a hand in it with the ridiculously long 200 mile gravel bike races on dirt roads that other countries do not follow.

Oh, yeah thanks. I think what I was describing is the Fat Bike. Gawd, bike marketing is off the rails crazy.
No offense but You don’t understand e-bikes. (Throttles, pedal assists etc. )
I understand e-bikes are for lazy people who should just admit they are on a motorcycle
It is an assist obviously. But it is also a good equalizer for those you ride with. For example, a co-worker in his upper 60’s still loves riding his MTB. Most of the time he rides his pedal bike but can’t keep up on group rides. Not that it bothered us but he felt like he was slowing us down so now he brings his ebike and we go faster. After a 40 mile day of MTB he’s tired… and so are we.
I have no issue with those who are older or injured using an ebike. I don’t like it when the 30somethings go blazing by you full turbo on the uphill but whatever.
Interesting economics. My Schwinn Varsity cost $67 in 1967 and I still use it indoors with a mag trainer. My Giant road bike cost me $350 in 2010 and I still take it on the road.
Tokyo's MITI always rescues Asian conglomerates in trouble. Japan has always helped it's Asian peoples. Giant will be strong again soon. Thanks for your concern.
I understand that we are an incredibly small market, but here in Vermont both gravel bikes and fat bikes are very useful and popular. A road bike is a death wish on our (few) paved roads, while a gravel is great on our thousands of dirt/staymat/gravel backroads with hardly any car traffic. Fat bikes are definitely a bit more gimmicky, but a solid option for hardcore mountain bikers when there's snowpack on the trails for 5 months a year. Just anecdotal, of course, but the gravel bike has essentially replaced the road bike around here. Now, if I lived in a regular old paved suburb, I would have no reason to buy gravel.
The topic of the thread is examining why bike companies are hurting. They are losing market share. Call an e-bike a motor bike if you want. Regardless they are hurting bike sales and growing exponentially.
While you are on the subject of motor bikes. Why the hell would you pay 15-20k for a super duper road bicycle? You can buy a freakin quality motorcycle for that price. Think of the engineering and quality difference. you are getting fleeced paying so much for a bike.
Too many Lance Armstrong wannabes.
ask the hobby joggers here why they pay $300 for carbon bouncey shoes when they can just get $5 keds shoes from walmart. motorcycles are not allowed in crit racing. go to a crit bike race, you will see beginner class (cat 5) show up with 10k$ bikes.
10k - 20k for a bike is not the norm. I have three bikes in my garage, my wife has two, and my son has two. I don't think all of them combined cost $10,000.
I'm not really a fan of e-bikes for fitness but I do think they are a good mode of transportation if you live in a city. You can pedal when you want to pedal and get more speed when you need more speed. I'll take those over those stupid scooters any day.
